REVELATION 22
The description of the holy city, New Jerusalem,
continues through the first 7 verses of this Chapter.
The descriptions found in these verses will cause one
to remember the description of the Garden of Eden in the
early Chapters of Genesis.
What we need to notice is that everything that
happened because of Adam and Eve’s sin is overcome by the
Lamb of God. The curse is removed and things lost because
of their sin are restored in Jesus.
“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear
as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the
Lamb.” Rev.
22:1
The Garden of Eden had a river. “And a river went out of
Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted,
and became into four heads.” Genesis 2:10
Jesus said He was a fountain but the Holy Spirit was a river.
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give
him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall
be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life”
John
4:14
“He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,
out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this
spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should
“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of
the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner
of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of
the tree were for the healing of the nations.” Rev.
22:2
It mentions ‘street’ as if there is only one.
“and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were
transparent glass” Revelation 21:21
The tree of life is in the middle of the street and on each side
of the river.
The tree yields 12 types of fruit. One for each month.
The leaves are for the healing of the nations. It sounds like
the ‘nations’ are still in normal bodies that need
healing.
“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of
the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner
of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of
the tree were for the healing of the nations.” Rev.
22:2
The tree of life removed from Adam is now restored to
Adam’s race.
“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become
as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put
forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and
live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from
the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was
taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of
the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which
turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life”
Genesis 3:22-24
“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of
God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall
serve him.” Rev.
22:3
Every curse ever placed on Earth will be removed.
Adam was cursed and the ground was cursed as well.
“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast
hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the
tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat
of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou
eat of it all the days of thy life”
Genesis 3:17
All animals were cursed
“And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou
hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above
every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and
dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life”
“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of
God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall
serve him.” Rev.
22:3
A lot of our work today is done because of the curse placed
on us.
Then all our service will be for the One who sits on the
throne of God, the Lamb Himself. Our service will not
involve trying to overcome a curse but just serving
Him.
“And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in
their foreheads.” Rev. 22:4
We shall see His face!!! Just think about it.
It is more important than walking on streets of gold, or
drinking from the river of life, or eating from the tree of
life.
We will see Jesus. And, He will see us and we will be wearing
His name in our foreheads.
“And there shall be no night there; and they need no
candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth
them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” Rev.
22:5
There will be no night in Heaven.
Once again, it says we won’t ‘need’ a candle or the light of the
sun. The light given forth by the Lord is all we really
need.
We will reign with Him forever and ever.
“And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and
true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to
show unto his servants the things which must shortly be
done.” Rev.
22:6
The things John had heard were faithful and true.
The Lord God once spoke through His prophets.
Now, He wants to speak through John. John has seen the
things which must shortly come to pass as promised
earlier.
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto
him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly
come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto
his servant John”
“Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the
sayings of the prophecy of this book.” Rev. 22:7
The description of the city closes with Jesus promising,
“Behold I come quickly”
The 6th
‘Blessed’ is pronounced on those who keep the
sayings of the book of Revelation. The same promise
had been given at the beginning.
“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the
words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are
written therein: for the time is at hand.”
Revelation 1:3
“And I John saw these things, and heard them. And
when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the
feet of the angel which showed me these things.” Rev. 22:8
John begins his conclusion to Revelation by giving his
assurance of the things he had seen and heard.
He even admitted that it was so outstanding that he fell
down to worship the angel who had told him and shown
him those things.
The same mistake he made after seeing the Bride.
“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto
me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy
brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for
the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Rev. 19:10
“Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy
fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them
which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.” Rev. 22:9
The angel rejects his worship and claims to be a
fellowservant to:
1. John
2. The prophets
3. Those who keep the sayings of Revelations
Only God is worthy of being worshipped.
“And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the
prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.” Rev. 22:10
God obviously wanted the book of Revelation to be
understood. Only the Holy Spirit can give
understanding, but He can also close a book so that it will
not be understood for a time. That is what He did to the
book of Daniel.
“But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the
book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro,
and knowledge shall be increased.” Daniel 12:4
“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which
is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him
be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.”
Rev. 22:11
Death forever seals a person’s spiritual condition. The one
who dies unjust will always be unjust. The one who
dies filthy will live in his filthy condition for eternity.
But, the ones who die righteous and holy will forever
be righteous and holy!
“If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves
upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or
toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it
shall be.” Ecclesiastes 11:3
“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with
me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am
Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and
the last.” Rev. 22:12,
13
Jesus promises again that He will “Come quickly”.
His own reward will be with Him but He will give them to
every man whose works deserve them.
The Alpha and the beginning and the first who started all
things perfectly will be the Omega and the end and
the last who will conclude all things perfectly as well.
“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that
they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in
through the gates into the city.”
Rev. 22:14
The 7th
and final ‘Blessed’ is pronounced.
Notice to whom it is given: Those that do His
commandments
“And this is his commandment, That we should
believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one
another, as he gave us commandment.” 1
John 3:23
Notice what the blessing bestows on them:
1.) To have a right to the tree of life
2.) To have the right to enter in through the gates into
THE 7 ‘BLESSED’ STATEMENTS
1. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words
of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written
therein: for the time is at hand.” Rev.
1:3
2. “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write,
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea,
saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their
works do follow them.” Rev. 14:13
3. “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth,
and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his
shame.” Rev. 16:15
4. “And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are
called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto
me, These are the true sayings of God.” Rev. 19:9
5. “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first
resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they
shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a
thousand years.” Rev. 20:6
6. “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the
sayings of the prophecy of this book.”
Rev. 22:7
7. “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they
may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the
gates into the city.” Rev. 22:14
“For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and
whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and
whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.”
Rev. 22:15
There are some who will never be privileged to enter in to
the city – they will always be ‘without’. They will not be
without knowledge of what is going on in the city.
“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and
seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.” Luke
16:23
“There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when
ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the
prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust
out.” Luke
“I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these
things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of
David, and the bright and morning star.” Rev.
22:16
Jesus becomes the Spokesman to declare that He is the One
who sent His angel to testify of Himself – this has been
”the Revelation of Jesus Christ” as declared in Rev. 1:1
1. He is the Lover of the Churches
2. He is the Lord of the Earth
3. He is the Light of the Creation
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him
that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And
whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Rev.
22:17
The Bible gives its last invitation – “Come”
1. The Holy Spirit invites sinners to come.
2. The Bride (Church) invites sinners to come.
3. Those who have themselves already come invite others to
now come.
4. Any who are thirsty can come and drink freely.
“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the
waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat;
yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without
price.”
Isaiah 55:1
“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him
that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And
whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Rev.
22:17
Jesus offers the living water to all who will come.
No one who has ever come has been turned away.
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life:
he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst. ---- All that the Father
giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I
will in no wise cast out.”
John 6:35, 37
“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words
of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto
these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are
written in this book: And if any man shall take away from
the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away
his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city,
and from the things which are written in this book.”
Rev. 22:18, 19
Man should not add to or take away from the inspired Word
of the living God:
1. To reject His warnings is to reap the judgments.
“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto
them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his
words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”
Proverbs 30:5, 6
“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words
of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these
things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written
in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words
of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out
of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the
things which are written in this book.” Rev. 22:18,
19
2. To refuse to believe the words of Scripture is to forfeit any
chance to be saved.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the
word of God.” Romans 10:17
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of
incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth
for ever.” 1 Peter 1:23
“He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come
quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” Rev. 22:20
Jesus gives His third and last promise in this last Chapter of
the Bible to come again. The other two times it was
“Behold”, but this time “Surely”. Each time, He said
“Quickly”.
John offers the last prayer found in the Bible, “Even so,
come, Lord Jesus”.
“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”
Rev. 22:21
It is not just any grace that the writer wants bestowed on us.
It is the grace –
1. Of our Lord – our Master, the One we are to serve
2. Of our Jesus – our Savior, the One who will give us Heaven
3. Of our Christ – our Anointed One, the One the Father has
anointed with the fulness of the Spirit to be all that we will
ever need.
It is His grace that needs to be with you all!
And, the final word – “Amen” , so be it!
