PRESENT PROGRESSIVE
(to be + verb –ing)
FORM
We form the present progressive with the
verb to be and add -ing to the base form
of the main verb.
I am learning English this semester.
You aren’t dancing now.
Is he singing tonight?
Yes, he is
SHORT ANSWERS
Are you …?
Yes, I am.
Yes, we are.
No, I’m not
No, we aren’t
he
Yes, she is
he it
Is she …?
it he
No, she isn’t
it
Are they …?
Yes, they are.
No, they aren’t
• In short answers
we use “Yes” or
“No”, the subject
pronoun and the
verb “to be” in
the correct form.
• We do not repeat
the main verb
with the –ing.
SPELLING: -ing.
•Most verbs take –ing after the base form of the
main verb.
talk  talking
•Verbs ending in –e, drop the –e before the –ing.
come  coming
•Verbs with one syllable ending in one vowel + one
consonant, double the consonant before the –ing.
stop  stopping
SPELLING: -ing.
•Verbs with two or more syllables ending in one
stressed vowel + one consonant, double the
consonant before the –ing.
Begin  beginning BUT answer  answering
•Verbs ending in one vowel + l, double the –l
before the –ing.
travel  travelling BUT sail  sailing
•Verbs ending in –ie, drop the –ie and take –ying.
die  dying
USE
The Present Progressive is used:
•For actions that are happening now or at the
moment of speaking.
What is Kelly doing now?
She‘s talking on the phone.
USE
•For actions happening around the time of
speaking or temporary situations.
I‘m working at a supermarket these days.
•For future arrangements.
You‘re travelling to Spain next year.
Time Expressions
• The time expressions
use with the present
progressive are:
• Now, Right now, At
the moment.
• Today, These days.
• Tomorrow, Next
week / year, etc.
