The Last Words of Jesus
Matthew 28:18–20
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All
authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to
the end of the age.”
Mark 16:15–18
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach
the gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has
been baptized shall be saved; but he who has
disbelieved shall be condemned. These signs will
accompany those who have believed: in My name they
will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;
they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly
poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the
sick, and they will recover.”
Luke 24:45–49
Then He opened their minds to understand the
Scriptures, and He said to them, “Thus it is written,
that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the
dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness
of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses
of these things. And behold, I am sending forth the
promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in
the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:4–8
Gathering them together, He commanded them not to
leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had
promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized
with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So
when they had come together, they were asking Him,
saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the
kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you
to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by
His own authority;
Acts 1:4–8
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has
come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to
the remotest part of the earth.”

A new thing
Jesus baptizes us IN the Holy Spirit
As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but
He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am
not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you
with/in the Holy Spirit and fire.

Baptize in the Holy Spirit
I baptized you with water; but

Mark 1:8
“As for me, I baptize you with
water; but One is coming who
is mightier than I, and I am not
fit to untie the thong of His
sandals; He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Luke 3:16
First Spirit Baptism
John 1:33 I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me
to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see
the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is
the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’

Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be

forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive

Let’s be clear
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the
Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had
said this, He breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.”
John 20:21–22
Pattern
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth,
the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you
were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who
is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to
the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise
of His glory.
Ephesians 1:13–14

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and
anointed us is God, who also sealed us and gave us the
Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

Notice two things
“For the promise is for you and your children and for all who
are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
Acts 2:39
The promised Holy Spirit Acts 2:33 (NASB95)
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God,
and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy
Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

But when they believed Philip preaching the good news
about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus
Christ, they were being baptized, men and women

Salvation
Baptism
Peter and John sent
…who came down and prayed for them that they might
receive the Holy Spirit. For He had not yet fallen upon
any of them; they had simply been baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 8:15-16
Have you received Jesus?
Then they began laying their
hands on them, and they were
receiving the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:17
Paul at Ephesus Acts 19
2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not
even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he
said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they
said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Paul said, “John baptized
with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to
believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in
Jesus.”
Paul at Ephesus
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his
hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and
they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

Theology Alert
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the
Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three
are one. And there are three that bear witness on
earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these
three agree as one.
