God sent Jesus, “God is with us.”
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, “God is within us.”
It is a kind of LIFE that
GOD wants for us.
John 16:7
“But I tell you the truth:
It is for your good that I am going away.
Unless I go away, the Counselor will not
come to you; but if I go, I will send him
to you.”
Life in the Holy Spirit is available to whom?
 To all who turn away from a life of sin.
 To all who receive Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
With the Holy Spirit, men gain:
 Union with God. ( Ephesians 2:18 )
18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
 A new nature. ( 2 Corinthians 5:17 )
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has
gone, the new is here!
 Power to serve as Jesus' witnesses. ( Acts 1:8 )
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you
will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth.”
THE EXPERIENCE OF EARLY DISCIPLES
Day of Pentecost - turning point in the early Christian
church
The 12 apostles were gathered together in a
house when a terrific wind came from heaven
and filled the place. They saw tongues that
looked like fire, that separated and came down
on each of them.
Immediately the apostles were filled with the
Holy Spirit, who caused them to speak in
tongues. The crowds of visitors were
astonished because every pilgrim heard the
apostles speaking to him or her in their own
foreign language! Some accused the apostles
of being drunk.
The Apostle Peter stood and addressed them, saying they were not drunk. It was only
nine o'clock in the morning. Then, empowered by the Holy Spirit, Peter preached
boldly to them, explaining about Jesus Christ and God's plan of salvation.
The crowd was so moved when Peter told
them of their part in Jesus' crucifixion
that they asked the apostles, "Brothers,
what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37, NIV).
The right response, Peter told them, was to
repent and be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their
sins. He promised that they would
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
They took the gospel message to heart. The
disciples were transformed from
frightened men into bold, powerful
apostles.
About 3,000 people were baptized and
added to the fledgling Christian church
on that Day of Pentecost.
Day of Pentecost
THE EXPERIENCE OF EARLY DISCIPLES
We can experience the same power and gift of the Spirit that
the early Christians did.
 Same relationship with Jesus
 Same transforming power
 Same deep worship
 Same power for speaking the gospel
1 Corinthians 12:1,4-11
1. Gift of Wisdom
2. Gift of Knowledge
3. Gift of Faith
4. Gift of Healing
5. Gift of Prophecy
6. Gift of Speaking in Tongues
7. Gift of Interpretation of Tongues
8. Gift of Discernment
9. Gift of Miracle
We can receive the same spiritual gifts:
Gift of tongues:
 Tongues is a common experience with the baptism
in the Spirit. Just like in Acts.
 It is a gift from God. Thus it is important.
Unlike the other spiritual gifts, tongues is a gift that
is immediately manifest.
Tongues can have great consequences on one's
spiritual life, especially in prayer and worship.
It is an important first step, and is often the
gateway to a fuller life in the Spirit.
How can we receive the baptism in the Spirit?
God has promised us the Holy Spirit
“So I sLuke 11:9-13
ay to you:
Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives;
who seeks finds; and to him who knocks,
the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[a] a fish, will give him a snake
instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then,
though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much
more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
We just need to ask in FAITH.
WHAT BEING BAPTIZED IN THE SPIRIT MEANS FOR US?
a. Knowing God more personally.
b. Praying in a new way (more God centered, more of
thanksgiving and praise rather than petition, more of
listening).
c. The Bible comes to life.
d. Better relationships (with spouse, children, others).
e. A new joy despite problems.
f. Much more: peace, answered prayers, guidance, etc.
We will be experiencing is a fuller release of the power of
the Holy Spirit in our lives
behappy
1. Unrepentant attitude. Refusing to admit sin as sin.
2. Feeling unworthy.
3. Fear. Of what others will think, of looking foolish, of being
overtaken.
4. Doubt.
5. Pride. Attitude of not wanting or needing God's gifts.
6. Being selective as to what gifts we want.
1. We will pray "Commitment to Christ".
2. Meet individually with your discussion group leader
3. Beware of temptations. Do not be afraid.
4. Review your intentions in this CLP.
A. One important warning: Since you are doing so well responding to God (you have
finished 2/3 of this CLP), you are making Satan very unhappy. He is losing his grip, but
will not give up.
1. So beware of temptations this week, or irrational doubt, or of strange
circumstances that Satan may pose in order to keep you from attending next week.
2. But do not be afraid. Simply call on Jesus' name to resist Satan and his works.
B. Take time also to review your intentions and expectations in this CLP. What are you
seeking? Is God's offer clear to you? How do you intend to respond?
C. God offers each of you new life.
1. This new life in the Spirit is the normal Christian life. God desires it for all.
2. Be open to it. Better yet, desire it. And have faith that you will receive it, because
God has so promised.
CONCLUSION
The Challenge
God is calling us to live a life of holiness and
spiritual power. For this, God has promised us
the Holy Spirit. Will you trust in the promise of
your Father? Will you accept Jesus as your
Lord and Savior? Will you ask for the infilling
of the Holy Spirit in your life?
Share about your experience of God’s spirit in your life.
