Raster Graphics • Raster Graphics are digital images made up of bitmaps, bitmaps are a graphic made up of pixels, every 1,000,000 pixels is a megapixel, bitmapped images have a fixed resolution, so scaling of the image can cause loss in quality, the raster files (bitmaps) are directly mapped to the display.
Vector Graphics • Vector Graphics, also known as vector paths are defined by 2 points, a start and an end, with curves, angles and points between them, this is used to create images such as lines, curves, squares and triangles vectors have no loss in definition, so if an image is scaled, it will not be distorted or pixelated, this is an advantage of Raster Graphics, as raster graphics do have loss in definition, so scaling can cause loss of definition in raster graphics.

JPEG Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group Used For/Example JPEGs can be used to display photographs and web formats. Advantage JPEGs have small file sizes, leaving more room, the JPEG format is compatible with browsers, mobile phones, tablets etc. JPEG files are good for small prints, such as, business cards or photo booth pictures. Disadvantage Loses quality when edited multiple times, when an image is edited it either gets compressed or recompressed, hence, losing quality.
TIFF Stands For Tagged image file format Used For/Example Saving documents, such as an adobe InDesign document. Advantage TIFFs can save multi-page documents and no quality is loss when compressed/ recompressed. File size can be reduced if using lossy compression such as JPEG algorithms. Disadvantage Files sizes are large and will take up more room compared to the JPEG format. Some websites will not support TIFF documents, when a website allows it, it will be a slow download speed, even when some websites allow these file formats they take a long time to lode.
GIF Stands For Graphic Interchange Format Used For/Example Used to create short, low quality animations. Advantage No need to show a full, lengthy video, file sizes are small due to it being a short animation, loading time is quick due to the small file size, GIFs can be used to entice a younger audience, because they are short and simple animations Disadvantage Animations can be pixelated, making the quality look very poor.
BMP Stands For Bitmap Image File Used For/Example The BMP format stores data for colour in each pixel, For example, a 10x10 pixel BMP image will include colour data for 200 pixels. Disadvantage Large file sizes, so more room taken up

PSD Stands For Photoshop Document Used For/Example PSD files are used for image manipulation, storing pictures made/edited in photoshop, such as, magazine cover. Advantage PSDs allow you to save layers, so you can go back to a specific image and edit it, PSDs do not lose quality when compressed. Disadvantage PSD files can only be viewed in photoshop, so if you want to look at a PSD file, you must have photoshop, PSDs cannot be uploaded to social media sites or blogs.
AI Stands For Adobe Illustrator Used For/Example AI can be used for the creation of logos and company graphics, detailed cartoons and technical diagrams Advantage Using AI offers more flexibility in the workspace, meaning better quality images. AI increases productivity as it includes panel editing. Disadvantage If an amateur AI user first uses it, it may take some experience and training to master it. Detail is key, so the user must be patient and observant.
FLA Stands For Flash File Used For/Example FLAs are used to create animations and video games. Advantage High quality files are produces, which comes in small file sizes, this means great quality with less room taken up, FLAs can include sound and video. Disadvantage FLA formats do not run on the web, leaving less use for the files.
WMF Stands For Windows Metafile Used For/Example Used for storing logos Advantage No loss in definition when scaled, giving more flexibility WMFs can contain both vector and bitmap components, which also gives it more flexibility, files can be directly placed in Microsoft word and saved as a JPEG, old programs will support WMFs Disadvantage WMF files can glitch when pasted into PowerPoint, especially if it is a graph of some sort.

Compression Definition Compression is the process of reducing file sizes by reducing the amount of information that is saved in an image etc. Advantage Compression can give the ability to make professional business cards with ease or scale an image to the size of a billboard, without losing quality, depending on the file format used Disadvantage Some files may lose quality when compressed, leaving images pixelated, blocky and very unprofessional, making it difficult to scale images to the size of billboards of business cards.

Optimising Why would you optimise? Optimised images will ensure easy viewing on the web, optimised images will also decrease file size, larger file types will take longer to download How can you optimise? Shrinking the image can help the image load faster, you should never enlarge the image, this means asking for more quality, leading to slower loading times. Advantage to optimising Images must not be more than 500 pixels wide, optimised images can be easier to view on the web and reduce file size. Disadvantage to optimising There is a chance quality will be lost, due to a smaller image size, this will mean, faster loading times, but quality will be lost.

Accurately naming your assets will make navigation a lot easier, if you are looking for a certain file, you can easily browse through the documents, searching for a certain name.

Using folders to store assets can help keep your documents organised and clean, so you can navigate from folder to folder without getting confused or lost. What folders would you create and what would you save within them • I would create folders for a specific part of the project I am on, I would save specific details and parts of the project within the folders, to make easy, smooth navigation through the folders.
