Jesus must return to fulfill two purposes: 1. To prove he is King by returning as the righteous judge, commander of heaven's armies, and ruling king. 2. To prove he is the victor by defeating his enemies the Antichrist and false prophet, whose armies will be killed by the sword from Jesus' mouth. Why must Christ return? 2 reasons
I. Christ must prove he is King (19:11- 16).
Jesus will return as the Righteous Judge (19:11-12). "Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war" (19:11 NLT).
"His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself" (19:12 NLT).
Jesus will return to fulfill Godā€™s Word (19:13). "He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God" (19:13 NLT).
Jesus will return as the Commander of Heavenā€™s Armies: "The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses" (19:14 NLT).
Jesus will return as the Ruling King (19:15-16) . "From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress" (19:15 NLT).

Why the Return?
Main Idea Jesus must return to claim his crown and defeat his enemies
I. Christ must prove he is King (19:11- 16).
II. Christ must prove he is Victor (19:17-21).

Figurative or Literal? 455
Is the New Jerusalem the Church?
New Jerusalem = The Church? The city is described as a "bride beautifully dressed for her husband" (21:2; see also vv. 9-10). Since the term "bride" often refers to the church (Isa. 54:5; Eph. 5:32; etc.), it would seem so here too (Hendriksen, 199). "Even in the Old Testament the Church is represented under the symbolism of a city (Isa. 26:1; Ps. 48; etc.)" (Hendriksen, 199).
