THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT BAPTISM
IS NECESSARY FOR SALVATION!

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and
spoke to them, saying, "All authority has
been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all
the nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all
things that I have commanded you; and
lo, I am with you always, even to the end
of the age." Amen.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY
1. Today many people have been taught and
believe that they can be saved without being
baptized.
2. It is extremely urgent that we examine the Bible
and see what it says about baptism and if it is
necessary for us to be baptized before we can be
saved.
3. What we think, what we feel, what we have
been taught or what we believe is not important.
4. What is important is what the Bible says about
the subject.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY
5. We will examine a number of scriptures dealing
with the subject of baptism and try to see what
God wants us to do about baptism.
6. I have used the New King James Translation but
feel free to use whatever reputable translation
you choose, the result will be the same.
7. As you look at these scriptures try to put aside
whatever you have been taught or believed in
the past about baptism and simply look at what
the Bible is saying each situation.

JESUS’ BAPTISM
(Mat 3:13-17) Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at
the Jordan to be baptized by him. {14} And John tried
to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You,
and are You coming to me?” {15} But Jesus answered
and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is
fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he
allowed Him. {16} When He had been baptized, Jesus
came up immediately from the water; and behold, the
heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of
God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
{17} And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying,
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

JESUS’ BAPTISM
1. Why did Jesus say John should baptize him? (Mat.
3:15) ______________________
2. Would all righteousness have been fulfilled if
Jesus had not been baptized? ____
3. If Jesus needed to be baptized to fulfill all
righteousness, is it not even more necessary for
us as sinners to be baptized to fulfill all
righteousness? _____

JESUS SENDS OUT THE APOSTLES
(Mark 16:15-16) And He said to them, “Go into
all the world and preach the gospel to every
creature. {16} “He who believes and is baptized
will be saved; but he who does not believe will
be condemned.

1. Jesus says the one who _________ and is

2. If you told me; “if you mow the yard and till the
garden I will give you $25”; and I came to you for the
$25 after just mowing the yard, would you give it to
me? ____ Or would you tell me I would get the $25
only after I did both of the things You told me to do?

saved. Both must be done before salvation comes. Isn’t

4. Some would say, “But it doesn’t say he who is not baptized
would be condemned. It only says he who does not believe
would be condemned.” Since it is obvious that belief comes
before baptism and there would be no reason for baptism
without first believing, then there would be no need to say,
“He who does not believe and is not baptized will be
condemned.”
5. Using the illustration in #2 above let’s see how this would
work. “He who mows the yard and tills the garden will
receive $25 but he who does not mow the yard will not be
paid.” Does the fact that I did not say, “He who does not
mow the yard and till the garden will not be paid” change
what was necessary to receive the pay? ____

PETER’S SERMON
(Acts 2:36-41) “Therefore let all the house of Israel know
assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified,
both Lord and Christ.” {37} Now when they heard this, they
were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the
apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” {38} Then
Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;
and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. {39} “For the
promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar
off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” {40} And with
many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying,
“Be saved from this perverse generation.” {41} Then those
who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day
about three thousand souls were added to them.

PETER’S SERMON
1. Peter told the people they needed to _______ and

arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of
great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians,
who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to
Jerusalem to worship, {28} was returning. And sitting in his
chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. {29} Then the
Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot." {30}
So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet
Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?"
{31} And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?"
And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. {32} The
place in the Scripture which he read was this: "He was led as
a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is
silent, So He opened not His mouth. >>>

PHILIP & THE EUNUCH
{33} In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who
will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the
earth." {34} So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask
you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of
some other man?" {35} Then Philip opened his mouth, and
beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. {36} Now
as they went down the road, they came to some water. And
the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from
being baptized?" {37} Then Philip said, "If you believe with all
your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." {38} So he commanded
the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch
went down into the water, and he baptized him. {39} Now
when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord
caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and
he went on his way rejoicing.

God with all his household, who gave alms generously
to the people, and prayed to God always. {3} About the
ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel
of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” {4}
And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said,
“What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and
your alms have come up for a memorial before God. {5}
“Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose
surname is Peter. {6} “He is lodging with Simon, a
tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what
you must do.”

CORNELIUS & PETER
(Acts 10:47-48) “Can anyone forbid water, that these should
not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we
have?” {48} And he commanded them to be baptized in the
name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
(Acts 11:13-17) “And he told us how he had seen an angel
standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa,
and call for Simon whose surname is Peter, {14} ‘who will tell
you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’
{15} “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them,
as upon us at the beginning. {16} “Then I remembered the
word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with
water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ {17} “If
therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we
believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could
withstand God?” . . .

CORNELIUS & PETER
1. Was Cornelius a “Godly” man?______
2. What does verse 6 of chapter 10 say Peter would tell

all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were
loosed. {27} And the keeper of the prison, awaking from
sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the
prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill
himself. {28} But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do
yourself no harm, for we are all here.” {29} Then he called for
a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.
{30} And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do
to be saved?” {31} So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” {32}
Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who
were in his house. {33} And he took them the same hour of
the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and
all his family were baptized.

THE PHILIPPIAN JAILER
1. What time did all of this take place? (25) __________

3. Does not the fact that they were immediately baptized in
the middle of the night, and didn’t put it off until a more
convenient time, show the importance of baptism? ____
4. Note that Paul told them to believe on the Lord. He then
spoke the word of the Lord to them and immediately they
were baptized. Throughout the book of Acts the immediate
response to the preaching was belief and baptism. What
reason would someone have for waiting to be baptized?

when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not
so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." {3}
And he said to them, "Into what then were you
baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." {4} Then
Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of
repentance, saying to the people that they should
believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on
Christ Jesus." {5} When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

THE 12 EPHESIAN DISCIPLES
1. Were these believers? _____
2. Did they have the Spirit? ____
3. What did Paul ask them when they said they had not
even heard of the Holy Spirit? _____________________

if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

SAUL’S (PAUL’S) CONVERSION

And at that same hour I looked up at him. {14} “Then
he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that
you should know His will, and see the Just One, and
hear the voice of His mouth. {15} ‘For you will be His
witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.
{16} ‘And now why are you waiting? Arise and be
baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name
of the Lord.’

SAUL’S (PAUL’S) CONVERSION
1. What was the only thing Ananias told Saul to do after he

in sin that grace may abound? {2} Certainly not! How
shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? {3} Or do
you not know that as many of us as were baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? {4} Therefore
we were buried with Him through baptism into death,
that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory
of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness
of life. {5} For if we have been united together in the
likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the
likeness of His resurrection, {6} knowing this, that our
old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin
might be done away with, that we should no longer be
slaves of sin. {7} For he who has died has been freed
from sin.

PUTTING OFF THE SINFUL NATURE

(1 Pet 3:18-22) For Christ also suffered once for sins,
the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God,
being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the

spirits in prison, {20} who formerly were disobedient,
when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days
of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a
few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. {21}
There is also an antitype which now saves us; baptism
(not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the
answer of a good conscience toward God), through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ, {22} who has gone into
heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and
authorities and powers having been made subject to
Him.
