Textile & knit print
Design
Textile Design
Textile design is the process of creating patterns, motifs, colors, and
textures that are applied to fabrics. It combines creativity with technical
knowledge to produce visually appealing and functional textiles for fashion,
home furnishings, and industrial uses. Textile design can be developed
through weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, or finishing techniques.
Key elements:

• Motifs & Patterns – florals, geometrics, abstracts, traditional, etc.

• Color Schemes – harmonious and impactful use of color.

• Surface Decoration – embroidery, printing, applique, etc.

• Application – garments, upholstery, curtains, accessories, etc.

Knit Print Design
Knit print design refers to the creation and application of printed patterns
specifically on knitted fabrics. Since knit fabrics are stretchable, soft, and
flexible (like jersey, rib, interlock, fleece, etc.), special care is required to
maintain print quality and durability.
Key features:

• Printing Methods – screen printing, rotary printing, heat transfer, and

digital printing are commonly used.

• Design Styles – stripes, polka dots, florals, abstract, logos, or placement

prints for fashion wear.

• Challenges – maintaining print sharpness on stretchy surfaces, preventing

cracking or fading, and ensuring wash fastness.

• Applications – t-shirts, sportswear, leggings, babywear, casual fashion,

activewear.

🔹 What is Color?
Color is a visual perception created when light waves are absorbed and reflected by objects
and then interpreted by the human eye and brain. It depends on three main elements: light,
object, and eye.

🔹 Primary Aspects of Color

1. Hue
◦ The name of the color (red, blue, green, etc.).
◦ It defines the position of a color on the spectrum.

2. Value
◦ The lightness or darkness of a color.
◦ Adding white makes it lighter (tint), adding black makes it darker (shade).

[Link] (Intensity/Chroma)
◦ The purity or strength of a color.
◦ A highly saturated color looks vivid, while low saturation looks dull or grayish.
🔹 Color Categories
1. Primary Colors – Red, Blue, Yellow (cannot be made by mixing other colors).

2. Secondary Colors – Green, Orange, Purple (formed by mixing two primaries).

3. Tertiary Colors – Made by mixing a primary with a secondary (e.g., Red-Orange, Blue-Green).

🔹 Color Wheel
A circular arrangement of colors showing relationships among primary, secondary, and tertiary
colors. It helps in understanding harmony and contrast.
🔹 Color Harmonies
• Monochromatic – Variations of one color (light, dark, muted).

• Analogous – Colors next to each other on the wheel (e.g., blue, blue-green, green).

• Complementary – Colors opposite on the wheel (e.g., red & green).

• Triadic – Three evenly spaced colors (e.g., red, blue, yellow).

• Split Complementary – One color + two colors next to its opposite.

🔹 Importance of Color
• Influences mood and emotion (red = passion, blue = calm, yellow = energy).

• Creates aesthetic appeal in fashion, art, and design.

• Used for communication and symbolism in culture and branding.
