Amplitude Modulation Techniques Explained

The document outlines a lecture on Amplitude Modulation (AM) as part of the Analog and Baseband Communication course. It covers topics such as Fourier and Hilbert Transforms, types of AM, spectral analysis, and noise performance in AM systems. Additionally, it discusses the characteristics of AM modulators and demodulators, emphasizing the trade-offs in modulation index and efficiency.

AM Modulator
(Square law modulator)

• Let us consider the use of a nonlinear device such as a P-N diode which has a voltage-
current characteristic
• The nonlinearity will generate a product of the message m(t) with the carrier, plus additional
terms
• We know the strength of practical message signal is much small and if we generate the
carrier signal with little strength the diode can be operate in square law characteristic region.

• To get higher value of S/N, Modulation index should be small and for small value of
modulation index modulation efficiency is low, but for the efficient power should be
maximum. Hence this method is not preferred for AM demodulation.
