DEFINITION
The Professional Organization is the one that
provides a means through which efforts can
be channelled with authority because of the
number it represents.

A professional Organization is
an organization, usually non-profit that exists to
a particular profession, to protect both public
interests and the interests of professionals.

❶ Trained Nurses Association of
India
(TNAI)
1. (TNAI) is a national organization of nurse professionals at
different levels. It was established in 1908 and was initially
known as Association of Nursing Superintendents.
[Link] Government of India has recognized TNAI as a service
organization in 1950.
[Link] level of organization moves to the district, state and
national level
[Link] of TNAI are usually most active on the level of the
local unit Activities and conference.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Representing the nursing profession.
2. Advocating for nurse’s rights.
3. Promoting professional development.
4. Building community
5. Endorsing nursing education.

-To establish standards and qualifications for nursing practice.
-To inspire and promote research intended to enhance the
knowledge for evidence-based nursing practice.
-To promote legislation and to speak for nurses.
-To promote and protect the economic wel-fare of nurses.
-To provide professional counselling and work placement service
for nurses.
❷ Student Nurses Association of
India
(SNA)
SNA is a national wide organization of nursing
students.
It
was during the TNAI Annual conference of
1929 in madras, SNA was formed.
The first Honorary Organizing Secretary of SNA
: Miss L Rina Jeans, Nursing Superintendent,
Gov. General Hospital, Madras.
SNA Body
The SNA body is functional at various levels, it starts
with the SNA unit, which is proactive within an
institute. All the units of the state are under the state
SNA. Next level is national level SNA body, which is at
the top level, representing all the state level SNAs
and is directly connected with TNAI.
Roles and Responsibilities
SNA offers all student nurses a platform for general growth and development through a
variety of educational, curricular, co-curricular and professional activities. The
association agrees that encouraging nursing students to participate in art, dance,
singing, athletics and other activities is essential to their personal and professional
development. Students are provided ample opportunities to channelize their energies
into creativity and vigour.
● Meetings and conferences:
Once a year, the SNA General Committee meeting is conducted. By doing this, SNA
gives students the chance to take part in these activities..
● Maintenance of SNA diary:
The concept of SNA diary was introduced in 1939. This is a record of educational,
pro-fessional and extracurricular activities.

❸ Nurses League of Christian
Medical Association of
India (CMAI)
● It was founded in 1905 as the Medical
Missionary Association(MMA) and support
professionals engaged in holistic healing
1926, MMA was rechristened as the Christian
Medical Association of India (CMAI) and has
grown in strength by keeping pace with the
changing healthcare needs in this country.
Roles & Responsibilities

members.
2. Development of leadership abilities is encouraged
by participation in these meetings.
3. Each meeting also allows for sharing of problems
common to Christian nurses.
4. Provides expert professional advice.
5 Provide scholarships for advanced study.
6. Provides financial assistance for professional
meetings and seminars.
❹ International Council of Nurses
(ICN)
ICN is a federation of more than 130 National Nurses Associations
(NNAs), representing more than 16 million nurses worldwide.
2 It was founded in 1899 and is the world’s first and widest
reaching international organization for health professionals.
3. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
4. It is operated by nurses and leading nurses internationally
and works to ensure quality of nursing care for all, sound
health policies globally, the advancement of nursing
knowledge, and the presence worldwide of a respected nursing
profession and a competent and satisfied nursing workforce

1 Makes policy statements on health and social issues
2. Offers a great variety of seminars
3. Maintaining and improving the status of nursing around the
world.
Membership
All nurses can become members of the ICN but not as
individuals. Nurses in India become members of ICN
when they become members of TNAI.
❺ International Confederation of
Midwives
(ICM)
. The International Confederation of Midwives
(ICM) is an accredited, non-governmental
organization that works closely with the
WHO,UNFPA, UNICEF and other organizations
worldwide to achieve common goals in the
care of mothers and children.
Roles and Responsibility
It has expertise in making, advising, per suading and
empowering the midwifery profession across the globe.
ICM developed the definition of midwife and midwifery:
A midwife is a person who has success fully completed a
midwifery education.
Programme that is based on the ICM Essential
Competencies for Midwifery Practice and the framework of
the ICM Global Standards for Midwifery Education.
