Conversion Factor
• A conversion factor is a ratio that specifies how one unit of
measurement is related to another unit of measurement.

• Consider the relationship between minutes and seconds:

1 min =60 seconds

How do we convert?
Example: Convert 8 in to centimeters.
Step 1: Write the number down with units.
8 in
Step 2: Set up a “ T Chart ”
8 in

Step 3: Find a conversion factor with the same units in the denominator.
8 in 2.54 cm
1 in
Step 4: Cancel units (NOT numbers)
Step 5: Simplify and keep the units that aren’t cancelled out
= 20.3 cm
