Objectives
At the end of this chapter, students will be able to :
• Identify characteristic of newspaper
• Identify press,magazine and news feature
• Identify channels of news printed and digital
• Analyse media channel organization
Newspaper Organization
• Knowledge of the editorial functions of newspaper is essential in the
preparation and distribution of publicity and relations with the media
• The publisher is in charge of the editorial staff of a daily. They are
responsible for editorial policies and less active in determining
editorial content.
• The managing editor is responsible for news content of
paper,supervise the city editor
• The city editors responsible for all local news,staff of city editor
include local news reporter, rewrite feature editor and special editors
including the business editor

publicity of company publicity and photograph distributed by PR
department
• State,national international news on cover page responsible of state
national who report to managing director of the news agency
• They handle news from head bureau of newspaper and collect from
staff correspondent

Types of Newspapers
• Newspapers can be classified by three factors:
• Frequency of publication (daily, weekly, and so on)
• Format and size
• Circulation

and Publicity
• News syndicate and wire service distribute news to newspaper
throughout country
• Two major wire services in USA:

• These two service operate through regional wires and state wires in

• The news copy and photograph are sent through system by means of
electronic transmission

• Newspaper readership has been declining for years, although
it remains a fairly healthy advertising medium.

Consumer Magazines
• Provide the general public for information or entertainment.
• More detailed classification: general editorial, sports, travel,
and women’s.
• Distribution: subscription (circulation), store distribution, or
both.
• Frequency: weekly, monthly, and bimonthly.
Consumer Magazines
• Accounting for nearly 2/3 of all advertising dollars spent in
magazines.
• Top 25 consumer magazines account for 70% of all
advertising dollars spent in consumer magazines.

Farm Publications-Magazine
• Farm publications are not classified with business publications because
historically farms were not perceived as business.
• About 3,00 publications are tailored to nearly every possible type of
farming or agricultural interest.
• The farm publications into 9 classifications, ranging from general-interest
magazines aimed at all types of farmers to those in specialized agricultural
areas such as poultry, hot farming, or cattle raising.

• The editorial staff of a magazine is headed by an editor in chef with an executive
editor and managing editor as assistant
• The editorial staff includes a chief editorial writer,art director,copy editor,picture
editor,chief of research supported by associate and reporter
• News magazine also maintain national and foreign news department with
correspondent located in different countries and cities
• General magazine have special editor for sport, education science, travel

• 95% of magazine companies have a subscription tactic and digital
subscriptions are increasing revenue by attracting younger audiences,
gathering valuable consumer data, and improving ad sales
• Print ad revenue is rapidly dropping, slipping from $19.14 billion in
2012 to $16.4 billion in 2016, while digital ads have produced an
increase of 3% revenue
• More than 50% of digital magazine users have spent up to $100 on
subscriptions, and 23% have spent anywhere from $100-$300 in the
past year
Social Media as a New Form of Marketing
Print v. Digital
• Companies are pinpointing their brand's strengths and developing
social media strategies in order to make their magazines more
interactive in the new Digital Age
• By creating a social media strategy magazines can:
1. Keep up with the competition in the Digital Age
2. Can form a new medium to market their magazine
3. See an increase in revenue
• Digital magazines use certain point of views that allow the reader to
see the source given
• With print magazines being so time consuming and the attention span
of the average reader is decreasing, the rise of digital magazines was
almost expected.
• However, print is less distracting and easier to indulge.
• Subscribers receive print copies and are able to access editions
through the app or online
• People also offers single issue and short subscriptions through their
app as well as access for existing subscribers
