b. As the length increases, the width
decreases.
c. As the length and width increase, the area
also increases.
d. As the length and width increase, the area

b. The longer the time, the faster the speed.
c. The longer the distance, the slower the speed.
d. The shorter the distance, the faster the speed.
VARIATION
It is a relationship between
two or more variables in such a
way that as one quantity
changes, the other quantity
also changes in a definite way.
VARIABLE
In Mathematics, variable is defined as
the alphabetic character that expresses
a numerical value or a number. In
algebraic equations, a variable is used
to represent an unknown quantity.
There are two types of variable; the
dependent and independent
variable.
Independent
Variable
A variable that stands alone and is not
changed by the other variables you are
trying to measure. It is considered as
the cause or reason of an observed
effect.
It typically acts as the “x” of the
variation.
Dependent
Variable
A variable that depends on another
variable you are trying to measure.
Consider as the effect or outcome in a
situation.
It typically acts as the “y” of the
variation.

SEATWORK #1
Identify the dependent and independent
variable. Encircle the dependent variable
and box the independent variable.
[Link] can’t decide if he should go to
school because the LGUs don’t yet
announce if the class is suspended due to
alleged Typhoon .
[Link] Brenzy wants to give good grades, but
the students do not comply with the
subject requirements.
3. If Gray will not attend the class, then so
does Yvonne.
4. God will provide, let us don’t lose hope.
5. I forgot to review, that’s why I got low
scores with my quizzes and post rants about
my teacher on social media.
TYPES OF
VARIATION
1. DIRECT VARIATION
It is a variation in which the quotient of
two variables is constant.
In Direct Variation, as one variable
increases/ decreases, the other variable
also increases/ decreases respectively.
It is also defined by an equation of the
form where
y varies directly as x y is proportional to x
y is directly proportional to x
DIRECT VARIATION
Example: Write an equation for the following
statements.
1. The fare F of a passenger varies directly as
the distance d of his destination.
; where
DIRECT VARIATION
Example: Write an equation for the following
statements.
2. The salary S of a worker is proportional to
the number of hours h he works.
S; where
DIRECT VARIATION
Example: Write an equation for the following
statements.
3. The cost C of notebooks is directly
proportional to the number n of notebooks
bought.
; where
DIRECT VARIATION
Example:
1. If y varies proportionally to x, and y = 25
when x = 5, find the variation constant and
the equation of variation.
2. If y varies directly as x, and y = 24 and x =
6, find the value of y when x = 15.
3. If y varies directly as the square of x, and y
= 8 when x = 4, find y when x = 10.
2. INVERSE VARIATION
It occurs whenever a situation produces
pairs of numbers whose product is
For quantities x and y, an increase in x
constant.
causes a decrease in y or vice versa. We
can say that “y varies inversely to x”
It is also defined by an equation of the
form .
INVERSE VARIATION
Example: Write an equation for the following
statements.
1. The number of pizza slices p varies
inversely as the number of person n
sharing a whole pizza.
; where
INVERSE VARIATION
Example: Write an equation for the following
statements.
2. The length l of a rectangular varies
inversely as its width w.
; where
INVERSE VARIATION
1. Suppose a varies inversely with b. When b
Example:
=4, a = ½, find the constant and equation.
2. If y varies inversely as x, and y = 1/3
when x = 18, find y when x = 2.
3. If y varies inversely as x, and y = 5 when x
= 4, find the value of y when x = 10.
