SIMPLE MACHINES

GUIDING QUESTIONS
Q.1 What are simple machines
and how do they make work
easier?
Ans] Simple machines are tools
that make work easier by
reducing the amount of effort
needed to complete a task.
They do this by increasing the
force exerted to perform work
while conserving energy. Like by
using a lever we can lift or move
heavy objects.

Guiding questions
• How do simple machines affect
the amount of force needed to
perform tasks?
Ans]
Simple machines reduce the
amount of force required to
perform a task by increasing the
distance over which the force is
applied. This is known as
mechanical advantage. If a wheel is
attached to an axle, and a force is used
to turn the wheel, the rotational force,
or torque, on the axle is much greater
than the force applied to the rim of the
wheel.
Guiding questions
• What role do simple machines play in construction,
transportation and household tools?
Ans] Simple machines play a key role in
making work easier by reducing the effort needed to move or lift
objects. In transportation, they assist in mechanisms like gears,
pulleys, and levers to improve efficiency in vehicles. In
construction, levers, pulleys, and inclined planes help move heavy
materials and lift loads. For household tools, simple machines like
wedges (for cutting), screws (for fastening), and pulleys (for lifting)
help complete tasks more easily and effectively.

objects.
Crowbar Used to lift heavy
objects.
Screw Used to fasten wood
and metal together.

Activity 2] Draw or Design a new machine
using at least 2 simple machines.
• Label the parts and explain how it works.

REFLECTION SHEET 3 - WORKING OF SIMPLE MACHINES
• Activity 3:
• EXPERIMENT
• Create a lever using a ruler, a pencil, and
some weights.
• Record what happens when you move the
fulcrum closer or farther from the weight

REFLECTION SHEET 3 - WORKING OF SIMPLE
MACHINES CONTINOUATION
• 3. What Happens When You Move the Fulcrum?
• Scenario 1: Fulcrum Closer to the Load (Weight)
• Observation: It becomes easier to lift the weight.
• Why? The shorter distance between the load and fulcrum
increases mechanical advantage, meaning less effort is
needed. However, the ruler moves a greater distance.
• Key Concept: High mechanical advantage – easier lift,
longer effort arm movement.
REFLECTION SHEET 3 - WORKING OF SIMPLE
MACHINES CONTINOUATION
• Scenario 2: Fulcrum Farther from the Load (Weight)
• Observation: It becomes harder to lift the weight.
• Why? The longer distance between the load and fulcrum
reduces mechanical advantage, requiring more force to
lift the same weight. However, the load lifts more quickly
over a shorter distance.
• Key Concept: Low mechanical advantage – harder lift,
shorter effort arm movement.
REFLECTION SHEET 3 - WORKING OF SIMPLE
MACHINES CONTINUATION
• Scenario-3, If the fulcrum is placed exactly in the middle of the
ruler, the lever behaves like a balanced seesaw. Here’s what
happens:
• 1. Equal Load and Effort:
• If the weight (load) and the effort are equal and placed at equal
distances from the fulcrum, the lever will balance.
• When you apply force on one end, the other end rises by the
same amount.
Real-Life Example:
• A seesaw at a playground. When two people of equal weight sit
at equal distances from the center, the seesaw balances.
