Understanding Flower Structure and Function

The document is a science project by Yadnya Umesh Patil on flowers, detailing their structure, function, and parts. It explains that flowers are reproductive structures in flowering plants, responsible for producing seeds and fruits through pollination and fertilization. The main parts of a flower include sepals, petals, stamens, and pistil, each serving specific roles in reproduction.

TOPIC- FLOWERS
WHAT ARE FLOWERS?

A Flower, also known as a bloom or blossom, is the

reproductive structure found flowering plants. The
flower structure contains the plant’s reproductive
organs, and its function is
to produce seeds through reproduction.
Different plants have different types of flowers.
Some of them are HIBISCUS, ROSE, JASMINE,
SUNFLOWER, MARIGOLD, LILY etc.
Flowers are an important evolutionary
advance made by flowering plants. Some
flowers are dependent upon the wind to
move pollen between flowers of the same
species. Their pollen grains are light-
weight. Many others rely on insects or birds
to move pollen. Their pollen grains are
heavier. The role of flowers is to
produce seed, which are inside fruit. Fruits
and seeds are a means of dispersal. Plants
Flowers have long been admired and used
do not move, but wind, animals and birds
by humans. Most people think that flowers
spread the plants across the lands
are beautiful. Many people also love flowers
for their fragrances (scents). People enjoy
seeing flowers growing in gardens. People
also enjoy growing flowers in their
Parts of flPARTS ers
● The main parts of a flower are sepals, petals,
stamens and pistil.
● 1. SEPALS- the green leaf-like parts in the outermost circle
of a flower are called sepals. The sepal is a part of the
flower of angiosperms.
Usually green, sepals typically function as protection for
the flower in bud.

● 2. PETALS- These are usually bright-coloured due to the

present of coloured pigments. Petals are modified leaves
3. STAMENS- They are found just inside the
petals of a flower. They are usually 4-6 in
number. All the stamens of a flower are
collectively androecium. The stamen
consists of along slender stalk, the filament,
with a two lobed anther at the tip. The
stamen is the male reproductive part of a
flower.

flask-shaped organ called pistil. The pistil is
the female reproductive part of a flower.
Each pistil consists of stigma, style ad ovary.
Stigma receives the pollen grains from the
FUNCTION OF A FLOWER
● The main function of a flower is to produce fruits and seeds . The
fruits and seeds are formed in a flower by the process of
pollination and fertilization.
● The transfer of pollen grains from another to the stigma of a pistil
is called pollination. Pollination is done by insects, wind and
water.
● When the pollen grains fall on stigma, they move down through
the tube called style and reach the ovary. Inside the ovary, the
male sex cells present in the pollen grains fuse with the female sex
cells present in the ovules. The fusion of male and female sex cells
is called fertilisation.
● After fertilisation, the ovules grows and became seeds.
The ovary of a flower grows and becomes fruits(with seeds in
it).The fruit protects the seeds. The other parts of the flower dry
up and fall off.
