Understanding Solar Radiation Basics

The document discusses solar thermal systems, focusing on solar radiation as a renewable energy source due to its inexhaustibility and low environmental impact. It explains the nature of solar radiation, its composition, and factors affecting its intensity, such as latitude and weather. Additionally, it covers solar geometry and the importance of time corrections in solar energy modeling.

1
Solar Radiation
Question 2: Why is the sun considered a renewable energy source?
 Inexhaustibility on a Human Timescale
 No Consumption of the Sun
 Low Environmental Impact
Question 3: What Makes Solar Energy Predictable and Reliable in Some Regions but Less So in
Others?

2
Solar Radiation
 Solar radiation is the electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun due to nuclear fusion reactions
in its core.
 Solar radiation includes ultraviolet (UV)[~8%], visible light [~43%], and infrared (IR) [~49%]
wavelengths.

Solar Geometry and Time Corrections
 Solar geometry refers to the study of the angles and positions that define the relative location of
the sun with respect to a specific point on Earth.
 This geometry is critical in solar energy, climatology, and atmospheric science because it
determines how much solar radiation a surface receives at any given time and location.

2. Time Corrections in Solar Geometry

 Solar radiation models require solar time, not standard civil time.

 Several corrections are applied to convert from clock time to solar time:
