Overview of Robotics and Drones

Robotics is an interdisciplinary field focused on designing and operating robots to automate tasks traditionally performed by humans, while drones are unmanned aerial vehicles initially developed for military use that have since expanded into various civilian applications. The history of robotics dates back to the 1950s with the invention of the Unimate, and drones emerged shortly after the Wright brothers' flight during World War I. Robots are utilized across numerous industries for their efficiency and precision, although they also present challenges such as maintenance costs and potential job displacement.

ROBOTICS AND

DRONES
INTRODUCTION TO ROBOTICS
AND ROBOTS
• Robotics is an interdisciplinary field that involves the design, construction, operation, and
use of robots.
• Robotics integrates many fields that deal with specific aspects of robotics.
• The field of robotics develops machines that can automate tasks and do various jobs that a
human might not be able to do. Robots can be used in many situations for many purposes.
• Robots can take any form, but some are made to resemble humans in appearance. This is
claimed to help in the acceptance of robots in certain replicative behaviors which are usually
performed by people.
INTRODUCTION TO DRONES

• An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without any human pilot,
crew, or passengers on board.
• Drones were originally developed through the twentieth century for military missions which are too
"dull, dirty or dangerous" for humans, and by the twenty-first, they had become essential assets to most
militaries.
• As control technologies improved and costs fell, their use expanded to many non-military
applications. These include aerial photography, precision agriculture, forest fire monitoring, river
monitoring, environmental monitoring etc.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
• Artificial Intelligence { AI} is technology which resembles the same activities in computer as humans.
• It is also the field of study in computer science that develops and studies intelligent machines. "AI" may
also refer to the machines themselves.
• The various sub-fields of AI research are centered around particular goals and the use of particular
tools. The traditional goals of AI research include reasoning, knowledge
representation, planning, learning, natural language processing, perception, and support for robotics.

HISTORY OF ROBOTS AND DRONES

# HISTORY OF ROBOTS :
 The origins of robotics and the first robots contain diverse names and dates, but there has always been the
same common goal: to prevent humans from performing the heaviest, most dangerous and tedious tasks.
 The earliest robots as we know them were created in the early 1950s by George C. Devol, an inventor from
Louisville, Kentucky. He invented and patented a reprogrammable manipulator called "Unimate," from
"Universal Automation." For the next decade, he attempted to sell his product in the industry, but did not
succeed.
 In the late 1960s, businessman/engineer Joseph Engleberger acquired Devol's robot patent and was able to
modify it into an industrial robot and form a company called Unimation to produce and market the robots. For
his efforts and successes, Engleberger is known in the industry as "the Father of Robotics.“

# HISTORY OF DRONES
 The first drone was created 16 years after the flight of the Wright's brothers.
 The first drone was developed in Britain and the USA during the First World War.
 Then , it evolved via military applications and was mostly used for wars like in cold war and World War II.
ROBOTICS IN DETAIL
• Robotics is a branch of engineering and computer science that involves the conception, design,
manufacture and operation of robots.
• The objective of the robotics field is to create intelligent machines that can assist humans in a variety of
ways. Robotics can take on a number of forms.

# USES OF ROBOTS :
Robots are widely used in manufacturing, assembly, packing and packaging, mining, transport, earth and space
exploration, surgery, weaponry, laboratory research, safety, and the mass production of consumer and industrial goods .

# ADVANTAGES OF USING ROBOTS :

1. Robots produce more accurate and high quality work.
2. Robots rarely make mistakes and are more precise than human workers.
3. They can produce a greater quantity in a short amount of time.
4. They can work at a constant speed with no breaks, days off, or holiday time.

# DISADVANTAGES OF USING ROBOTS :

5. If the robots are not well maintained, it will malfunction, this may be disastrous
during manufacturing or production processes.
6. Operational costs are higher due to power costs and grease costs.
7. Highly skilled man power is needed to implement and maintain robots.
8. They are doing the work which should be done by humans and slowly all work
will be done by robots without any includation of humans.
COMPONENTS OF ROBOTS
• A robot is made up of the very same components.
• A basic typical robot has a movable physical structure, a motor of some sort, a sensor system, a power
supply and a computer "brain“ based on AI, that controls all of these elements.
• It is the brain of the robot and is where its movements are controlled, through the computer system
that will program the instructions of the tasks to be performed.
