What is Descriptive Writing?
• - A style of writing that creates a vivid picture
in the reader’s mind.
• - Uses words to appeal to the senses.
• - Helps the reader see, hear, smell, taste, and
feel the scene.
Purpose of Descriptive Writing
• - To show rather than tell.
• - To make the reader feel as if they are inside
the moment.
• - To create strong impressions of people,
places, objects, or events.
Elements of Descriptive Writing
• 1. Sensory Details – sight, sound, smell, taste,
touch.
• 2. Figurative Language – similes, metaphors,
personification.
• 3. Precise Vocabulary – using exact, specific
words.
• 4. Tone and Mood – the feeling created by the
writer.
• 5. Organization – logical order (spatial,
chronological, thematic).
Characteristics
• - Vivid and detailed → paints a mental image.
• - Uses imagery → reader can imagine clearly.
• - Focus on one subject → avoids being vague.
• - Strong adjectives & verbs → replaces weak
words.
• - Engages emotions → makes the reader feel
something.
Example: Show vs. Tell
• Telling: The garden was beautiful.

• Showing: Roses climbed along the fence, their


petals glowing like rubies in the sunlight. The
air smelled of fresh jasmine and damp earth.
Tips for Students
• - Use a variety of senses (not just sight).
• - Think like a camera + microphone recording
everything.
• - Choose interesting angles (zoom in on
details).
• - Avoid overloading with adjectives—balance
is key.
Practice Prompt
• Describe your favorite place in your house
without naming it.
• Use at least three senses.
Example: Sensory Details
• Sight: The golden sunset painted the sky in
streaks of orange and purple.
• Sound: Waves crashed rhythmically against
the shore.
• Smell: The salty scent of the ocean hung in the
air.
• Touch: Cool sand slipped between my toes.
• Taste: A hint of sea breeze lingered on my lips.
Example: Figurative Language
• Simile: The night was as silent as a sleeping
child.
• Metaphor: The classroom was a jungle of
restless energy.
• Personification: The wind whispered secrets
through the trees.
Example: Mood & Tone
• Mood (Calm): The river flowed gently, carrying
fallen leaves on its smooth surface.

• Mood (Tense): The river roared, slamming


against the rocks as if trying to break free.
