Introduction
The objective
• The ability to read and interpret technical information is as fundamental a
skill as the ability to design and build.
• Technical documents and drawings are the universal language of engineers.
• This language consists of symbols, tolerances, line types, and notations.
• Its vocabulary is built on standards and conventions that vary across
disciplines.
• Misreading a single note on a drawing or misinterpreting a step in a manual
can lead to cascading errors, costly delays, or even critical failures.
• Our goal is to understand the drawing and the intent behind it.

Introduction
• Communication Skills is the ability to read and interpret technical
information and drawings.
• Technical information encompassing everything from complex engineering
schematics and architectural blueprints to software code, wiring diagrams,
and product specifications—is a universal language.
• The language consists of symbols, notations, lines, and views designed to
convey intricate details without the ambiguity غموضof words.
• A single drawing can communicate the exact dimensions, materials, assembly
instructions, and functional relationships of a component that might
12/13/2025 07:41 AM Lecture 1: Introduction Assoc. Prof. Hussein Sayed 3
otherwise require hundreds of pages of descriptive text.
Introduction
Communication Skills involves several key competencies:
Visual Literacy: اإللمام البصريUnderstanding the standard conventions of
technical drawings, such as orthographic projections, cross-sectional views, and
isometric representations.
Symbolic Decoding: فك التشفيرRecognizing and correctly interpreting the
meaning of specific symbols, line types (e.g., hidden lines, center lines), and
geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts.
Spatial Reasoning: التفكير المكانيMentally visualizing a three-dimensional
object from its two-dimensional representations on a page or screen.
Contextual Analysis: التحليل السياقيCross-referencing information
between the drawing itself, its associated bill of materials (BOM), legends, and
written specifications to build a complete understanding.

Technical Symbols
Technical symbols are the standardized, non-linguistic غير لغويةsigns used in
drawings, schematics, and diagrams to convey complex information concisely,
accurately, and universally.

Introduction
The Purpose and Importance of Technical Symbols
Universal Language: Symbols provide a common language that is independent of
spoken language.
Clarity and Space-Saving: They allow vast amounts of information to be
communicated in a limited space.
Reduced Ambiguity: الغموضStandardized symbols leave little room for
misinterpretation, which is critical for safety, manufacturing, and construction.
Efficiency: They enable faster reading and comprehension of complex systems once
the reader is familiar with the symbol set.

Engineering drawing symbols
Engineering drawing symbols are a universal language in the technical world. They
are used to communicate complex information about shapes, dimensions, materials,
and processes in a clear and standardized way, ensuring that engineers, designers,
machinists, and manufacturers can all interpret the same drawing without confusion.
Here’s a structured overview of the main categories of engineering drawing symbols:
1. Line Symbols
2. Dimensioning and Tolerancing Symbols
3. Surface Texture (Roughness) Symbols
4. Welding Symbols
5. Electrical and Hydraulic Symbols
6. Sectioning and Hatching Symbols
7. Material and Process Indications

Basic Line Types
In engineering drawing, every line has a specific meaning and weight. Using the correct line type is the first
and most critical step in creating a clear drawing.

Continuous thin line Dimension, Extension,
Leader, Hatching lines
Dash line Hidden line
Chain thin line Center line

Section Views A section view is an imaginary "cut" through an object, used to reveal complex internal features
that would be confusing with many hidden (dashed) lines.
