Defuzzification
 Defuzzificationis a mapping process from a
space of fuzzy control actions defined over an
output universe of discourse into a space of
crisp (non-fuzzy) control actions.

 Defuzzificationis a process of converting output

fuzzy variable into a unique number.

 Defuzzification process has the capability to

reduce a fuzzy set into a crisp single-valued
quantity or into a crisp set; to convert a fuzzy
matrix into a crisp matrix; or to convert a fuzzy
number into a crisp number.

Methods of Defuzzification
 Defuzzification is the process of conversion
of a fuzzy quantity into a precise quantity.

 Defuzzification methods include:

1. Mean-max membership (Middle of maxima)
2. Center of sums method
3. Weighted average method
4. First of maxima
5. Last of maxima
6. Centroid Method / Centre of Gravity /
Centre of Area Method

Centre of sums method
In Centre of sums method the
overlapping area is counted
twice.
This method is most commonly
used defuzzification method. It
can be implemented easily and
leads to fast inference cycles.
Weighted average method
Valid
for symmetrical output
membership functions.

Problem
For the given membership
function, determine the
defuzzified output value using
different defuzzification methods.
Solution
The output of an entire fuzzy
process can be union of two or
more fuzzy sets.
