Its Properties
Understanding Normal Curve
• The normal distribution or simply as normal
curve is a bell-shape distribution which has
important role in inferential statistics.
• It provides a graphical representation of
statistical values that are needed in
describing the characteristics of population as
well as in making decisions.
• The normal distribution • A random variable X whose
refers to a continuous distribution has shape of a
probability distribution normal curve called normal
described by the normal random variable. This random
equation variable X is said to be normally
distributed mean and standard
deviation .
Properties of Normal Probability
Distribution
1. The distribution curve is bell-shaped
2. The curve is symmetrical about its center.
3. The mean, median, and mode coincide at
the center.
4. The width of the curve is determined by
the standard deviation of the distribution.
5. The tails of the curve flatten out
indefinitely along the horizontal axis but
never touch it. The curve is asymptotic to
the base line.
6. The area under the curve is 1 or 100%.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE
CURVE OF THE NORMAL
DISTRIBUTIONS
1. Mean
2. Standard Deviation
Large value of standard deviation
makes the normal curve short and
wide.
Small value of standard deviation
yields a skinnier and taller normal
curve.
The Standard Normal Curve
It is a normal probability distribution that has a mean
standard deviation unit.

Empirical Rule or 68-95-99.7
1. Approximately 68% of the data lie within 1
standard deviation of the mean.
(μ - σ < X < μ + o)
2. Approximately 95% of the data lie within 2
standard deviations of the mean. (u -
2σ < X <μ +2σ)
3. Approximately 99.7% of the data lie within 3
standard deviations of the mean. (μ -
3σ < X < μ +3σ)
