What is Addition?
• Addition is the operation of combining two or more numbers to find

• Example: 5 + 3 = 8 (Five items plus three items make eight
items).

Column Method — Step by Step
• Steps (right to left):
• • Add the ones (units) digits.
• • If sum = 10, write the ones and carry the tens.
• • Add tens (including carry), then hundreds, etc.

• Ones: 8 + 9 = 17 ? write 7, carry 1.
• Tens: 7 + 4 + 1(carry) = 12 ? final answer 127.
• Answer: 127

• 1) Ones: 6 + 8 = 14 ? write 4, carry 1.
• 2) Tens: 5 + 7 + 1 = 13 ? write 3, carry 1.
