What is Characterization?

Characterization refers to the process of


developing and portraying characters in a story
of literary work. It involves the use of various
techniques, such as describing their appearance,
revealing their thoughts and emotions, depicting
their actions and behaviors, and showcasing
their interactions with other characters.

Direct Characterization

• This is when the author reveals the


character’s traits or qualities. It
involves providing direct description
or statements about the character’s
personality, appearance, or
background.
Indirect Characterization

• Indirect characterization is a type of literary


device that reveals details about a character
without stating them explicity. Instead of
describing a character in a straight forward way,
the author shows their traits through the
character’s actions, speech, thoughts, appearance,
nd how other characters react to them.
