TIME RATES
Module 4 Unit 3
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, you should be able to:
[Link] changing quantities in terms of
derivatives.
[Link] relationships among the derivatives in
a given problem.
[Link] the chain rule to find the rate of change
of one quantity that depends on the rate of
change of other quantities.
BASIC TIME RATES
GUIDELINES IN SOLVING TIME RATES PROBLEMS
[Link] the variables involved in the
problem
[Link] down the given facts
[Link] what is required
[Link] an equation involving the variables
defined and which is true for any time, t.
[Link] with respect to time t.
[Link] values and solve for what is
required.
ILLUSTRATIVE
EXAMPLES
1. Water is flowing into a vertical
cylindrical tank at the rate of 24 cu. ft.
per min. If the radius of the tank is 4
ft., how fast is the surface rising?
Solution:
2. A triangular trough is 10 ft. long, 6 ft.
across the top, and 3 ft. deep. If
water flows in at a rate of 12 cu. ft.
per min., find how fast the surface is
rising when the water is 6 in. deep.
Solution:
3. A ladder 20 ft. long leans against a
vertical wall. If the top slides
downward at the rate of 2 ft. per sec.,
find how fast the lower end is moving
when it is 16 ft. from the wall.
Solution:
4. A ladder 15 ft. long leans against a
vertical wall. If the top slides down at
2 ft./sec, how fast is the angle of
elevation of the ladder decreasing,
when the lower end is 12 ft. from the
wall?
Solution:
Another possible solution:
5. A balloon, leaving the ground 60 ft
from an observer, rises 10 ft/sec. How
fast is the angle of elevation of the
line of sight increasing, after 8
seconds?
Solution:
6. A kite is 60 ft high with 100 ft of cord
out. If the kite is moving horizontally 4
mi/hr directly away from the boy
flying it, find the rate of change of the
angle of elevation of the cord.
Solution:
Another possible solution:
7. A ship, moving at 8 mi/hr, sails east
for 2 hr, then turns N 30° W. A
searchlight, placed at the starting
point, follows the ship. Find how fast
the light is rotating, (a) 3 hr after the
start; (b) just after the turn.
Solution:
