SYNTHESIS
Parenting is a great and
challenging task. It requires a
thorough knowledge of
parental duties and
responsibilities for parents to
determine the extent of what
they can do and improve upon.
Just remember a very
important key when performing
your duties as parents, always
praise and respect your
children.

AUTHORITARIAN
Parenting is not an easy
task. It requires believing
in yourself and accepting
your roles and challenges
to become effective.
Parenting styles
There are four major
parenting styles
namely:
●permissive indulgent
●authoritative
●authoritative-
democratic
●neglectful parent
permissive indulgent
● This will mean that your child
can manipulate you because
you always follow the desires
and whims of your child.
● You are easily carried away
when your child cries, you feel
angry and depressed if he/ she
rebels.
● Your child usually becomes
impulsive and aggressive, low in
self reliance and in achievement
orientation, quick to anger and
domineering.
authoritative
● This will mean you are
domineering.
● all your words and rules must be
followed without complaint by
your children.
● you don’t listen to their words
and feelings.
● obedience is of prime
importance to you.
● Your child usually becomes
fearful, moody, unhappy,
passive, hostile, withdrawn and
irritable.
authoritative-democratic
● This means that you practice open
communication with your children.
● you don’t get easily mad at their
misbehavior.
● you try to find meaning and reasons in
the acts and ways of your children.
● you listen to their opinions and
feelings.
● you discuss rules and conduct that
should be observed inside the house.
● your child usually becomes friendly,
self-reliant, self-controlled, cooperative
and achievement-oriented.
neglectful parent
● You perceive your children to be of
secondary importance in your life.
● You don’t give so much care and concern
to the children.
● You usually entrust the needs and
problems of the children to themselves or
to other members of the house.
● You don’t give so much time and
attention.
● You have trained your children to give
time and attention to material things or
prize, career, friends, hobbies, vices and
other interest.
● Your child usually tends to have poor
social and cognitive skills. They are
emotionally immature, easily influence by
others and have very low achievement-
orientation.
SYNTHESIS
There is no exact parenting styles appropriate for every child.
However, your knowledge about your child and your kind of
relationship with him or her can help you determine an
appropriate parenting style. As a matter of fact, a combination of
the different styles will balance the formation of your child’s
behavior. No two families are alike and no two parents raise
their children in exactly the same way. The ultimate goal is to
create a healthy, nurturing, supporting family and community
environment in which children can achieve their full potential.

KEY Learning
points
● Women are burdened with
multiple duties and responsibility
once they become a wife and
mother.
● Even the working wife is faced
with care giving for the children
and husband as well as
management of the household.
● Our culture seems to dictate that
the men take care of earning an
income while the duties and
responsibilities pertaining to the
household and children are left to
the women
KEY Learning
points
● There is clearly an inequality of
distribution of duties and
responsibilities between the
husband and wife.
● Husband and wife should both be
gender sensitive. Being gender
sensitive means that both the
husband and wife is aware of each
other’s skills and capabilities. They
are not confined to the mindset of
‘this is what a husband should do
and this is a wife should do”
● They should recognize and share the
duties and responsibilities according
to interest, ability and competence.
Gender sensitivity can be
achieved if both partners
are respectful,
cooperative and
supportive of each other.
Gender sensitivity can be
taught to our children by
distributing the workload
according to interest,
ability and competence
and not according to
gender.
synthesis
Better relation between
husband and wife can be
achieved through improved
marital communication that
requires open
communication, dialogue,
levelling and listening to
each other’s feeling and
thoughts reflected in verbal
and non-verbal messages.
