Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking

in the 21st Century

Quarter 1
CLASS RULES:
1. Once the class begins, no one is allowed to talk.
2. If I ask a question, participate by raising your hand.
3. Arriving 15 minutes late will be considered absent.
4. If you do not submit an excuse letter, you will be marked
absent.
5. I will prepare a PowerPoint presentation as our class material,
and I will send it in our group chat after we finish each topic.
6. At the end of every topic, there will be a quiz.
7. Always remember that a good attitude is very important, and I
will give additional points for it.
8. Don’t pressure yourself—just focus on your goal. It’s not about
being number one, but about staying dedicated.
9. Be kind and respectful to everyone!
Emergence of Trends
and Patterns
Objectives:
By the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. Differentiate a trend from a fad.

2. Explain the process on how to spot a trend.
3. Point out the elements that make up a trend.
4. Describe the different characteristics of a
trend.
5. Identify parts of a whole.
6. Identify and explain an emerging pattern.
7. Identify causes and consequences.
What are Trends?

Trends are general directions in which

something is developing or changing.

They reflect shifts in behavior, technology,

or ideas over time.

Examples: Social media growth, online

education, eco-friendly lifestyles.
Microtrends – short-term, small-scale
(e.g., viral TikTok challenges).

Macrotrends – long-term, large-scale

(e.g., digital learning, remote work).

Megatrends – global forces shaping the

future (transformational)
(e.g., climate action, AI).
What are Patterns?
* Patterns are recurring events, designs,
or behaviors that repeat over time.

* Recognizing them helps predict future

events and make informed decisions.

Example: Rise and fall of industries or

repeated fashion revivals.
NOTE:
 A pattern is something that happens again and again in a similar way.
It could be:
 An event (like seasons repeating every year)
 A design (like shapes or colors repeating on wallpaper)
 A behavior (like someone always waking up at the same time)
 Because patterns repeat, we can notice them, understand them, and sometimes
predict what will happen next.

 When you notice a pattern—something that repeats—you can often guess what
might happen next because it has happened the same way before.
 Why this helps:
 If you know what usually happens, you can prepare for it.
 You can choose what to do based on what is likely to happen, which means you’re
making a smart (informed) decision.
Importance of Studying Trends and Patterns

1. Helps us anticipate future opportunities and risks.

* When we notice patterns, we can see what might happen

next.
This helps us:
* Spot opportunities (good things we can take advantage
of)
Example: If you see a pattern that people start buying warm
clothes every winter, you can prepare early to sell them.
* Identify risks (possible problems)
Example: If a machine usually breaks after a certain amount
of use, you can fix it before it fails.
Importance of Studying Trends and
Patterns

2. Encourages innovation and problem-solving.

Seeing patterns helps us understand how things work and
what causes certain outcomes.
This makes it easier to:
 Come up with new ideas,
 Create better solutions, and
 Improve what already exists.

Example: If a student notices they always forget things

while studying late at night, they can solve the problem by
Importance of Studying Trends and Patterns
3. Builds critical and analytical thinking.
Recognizing patterns trains the brain to:

 Observe carefully,
 Compare information,
 Look for cause-and-effect, and
 Understand relationships between things.
 This strengthens your ability to think clearly and logically.

Example: Detecting patterns in data helps someone make

sense of complex information.
Importance of Studying Trends and Patterns

4. Supports informed decision-making in personal and

professional life.
Patterns give us useful information about what has happened before.
When we use this information, our decisions are:
 More accurate
 More thoughtful
 Less risky

Examples:
Personal: If you know you overspend every time you shop without a
list, you can make a list to avoid repeating the pattern.
Professional: If a manager sees that team productivity rises when
meetings are shorter, they can plan shorter meetings in the future.
Trends in the 21st Century
Technological Trends
These are changes driven by new technology that affect
how we live and work.

Artificial intelligence (AI): Machines and software that

can think or learn, making tasks faster and easier.
Automation: Robots or systems doing jobs that humans
used to do, like manufacturing or customer service.
Social media: Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and
Facebook that change how people communicate and share
information.
Trends in the 21st Century
Social Trends
These are changes in how people behave, think, and
treat one another in society.

 Inclusivity: Making sure everyone feels accepted and

valued, regardless of background, identity, or ability.
 Digital citizenship: Learning to behave responsibly
and safely online.
 Mental health awareness: Understanding the
importance of emotional well-being and seeking
support when needed.
Trends in the 21st Century
Economic Trends
These are changes in how money, jobs, and businesses
work.

 Gig economy: People working short-term jobs or

freelance work instead of traditional full-time positions
(e.g., Uber, freelance design).
 E-commerce: Buying and selling goods online instead
of in physical stores.
 Cryptocurrency: Digital money like Bitcoin that uses
technology instead of banks.
Trends in the 21st Century
Environmental Trends
These are changes focused on protecting the
planet.

 Sustainability: Using resources in a way that

doesn’t harm the environment and can be
maintained long-term.
 Renewable energy: Energy that comes from
natural sources that won’t run out, like solar,
wind, and hydro power
Networks in the 21st Century
Networks are systems of interconnected
people
or organizations.
Types:
 Social Networks: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn.
 Professional Networks: Collaboration platforms,
academic groups.
 Information Networks: Internet, data systems,
cloud computing.
Critical Thinking and Trends

 Critical thinking enables objective

analysis of trends.

 It helps separate facts from opinions

and hype from real change.
Steps:
1. Observe
2. Analyze
3. Evaluate
4. Draw conclusions
How to Identify Emerging Trends

1. Observe behavioral changes and

technological shifts.
2. Follow research reports and media
updates.
3. Participate in online discussions and
surveys.
3. Use data analytics tools like Google
Examples of Emerging Trends

 AI in education (personalized learning).

 Mental health and wellness focus.
 Sustainable technologies and green
solutions.
 Digital currencies and blockchain
systems.
Summary:
 Trends show the direction of change.
 Patterns help predict and understand
developments.
 Networks connect people and ideas.
 Critical thinking helps evaluate and
adapt to change effectively.
