Writing: Describing process
What is a process paragraph?
A process paragraph explains how something is made or done.
Typical structure:

• Topic Sentence: Introduce the process.


• Supporting Sentences: Describe steps in order, using sequence
connectors.
• Conclusion: Summarize or highlight the final product/result.
What are cohesive devices?
Making Moroccan Mint Tea is a simple but
traditional process. First, water is boiled in a teapot.
Next, green tea leaves are added and allowed to steep.
Then, sugar and fresh mint leaves are placed into the
pot. After that, the mixture is poured from a height to
mix the ingredients [Link], the tea is served hot in
small glasses.
Activity 1: Underline or highlight all transition words in the
model text.
Activity 2: Match the transitions with their function
(sequence / addition / cause / result).
Activity 3: Reorder jumbled sentences to form a coherent
paragraph.
Task:
Write a paragraph describing a simple process.
You can write about:
• How to make orange juice
• How to send an email
• How to wash a car / make a PowerPoint / bake a cake
• Instructions:
• Write 5–7 sentences.
• Use at least five cohesive devices.
• Begin with a clear topic sentence.
• End with a concluding sentence.
Topic sentence:

Friday is considered a special day for


muslims all around the world. During this
day, they do many things differently. First,
they wake up early.
Step 1:
• Start with First / To begin with / The first step is…
• ➡️Example: First, water is boiled in a teapot.
Step 2:
• Use Then / Next / After that / In the next step…
• ➡️Example: Next, tea leaves are added to the boiling
water.
Step 3:
• Use After that / Meanwhile / When this is done…
• ➡️Example: After that, sugar and mint leaves are
added.
Step 4:
• Use Finally / At the end / In the last step…
• ➡️Example: Finally, the tea is poured into small
glasses and served hot.
Conclusion:
• End by saying what the final result is.
• ➡ Example: As a result, we get a delicious and traditional
drink.
