Control Panel

Accessibility Tools
• StickyKeys Enables simultaneous keystrokes
while pressing one key at a time, such as Ctrl+Alt+Del.

• FilterKeys Adjusts the response of your


keyboard; ignores repeated characters or fast key
presses.

• ToggleKeys Emits sounds when you press


certain locking keys, such as Caps Lock, Num Lock, or
Scroll Lock

• SoundSentry Provides visual warnings for
system sounds.

• ShowSounds Instructs programs to provide

• High Contrast Sets the desktop appearance to

Using the Utility Manager

Add New Hardware
• To install the device driver from a CD,
Diskette or from any location.

Procedure

 If you install a new hardware in your system then just start your
computer. The Add New Hardware Wizard window opens.
 Insert the stand-alone CD or diskette into the CD, DVD, or diskette
drive. The Add New Hardware Wizard opens.
 Follow the on-screen instructions. Installation is complete. If the
add-in card does not function correctly, see

located near to green Check.

Date & Time
• Double click the clock on the taskbar,
you will be presented with the
Windows XP Date and Time
Properties box.
To adjust the date use the monthly
calendar (A) along with the month
selector (B) and year selector (C).
To adjust the time, click on the part of
the time you want to change (hour or
minutes) D and then use the up and
down arrows (E) to change it.
To adjust the time zone click on the
Time zone tab (F) and then select
your time zone from the selection tool
provided.
The Internet Time tab (G) allows you
to synchronise your PC's clock with an
internet server.

Themes
• Right-click anywhere on the desktop and then select (left click) Properties
from the menu that appears.

Click on the small arrow that we have pointed out above and you will see a
selection of themes from which to choose from.
As you can see in our example we have 5 options:
My current theme = your current settings.
Windows Classic = if you are used to previous versions of windows then
this will be nice and familiar.
Windows XP = the default theme.
More themes online.. = allows you to look for more themes on the internet.
Themes continue

Browse... = if you have themes stored on your pc, for instance if you
have downloaded any, then select this option and navigate to the folder
where you have stored them.

When you have selected your theme you can preview it by clicking on the
Apply button, when you are happy with the selected theme simply click
OK.

The Save as button allows you to save your current theme (for
instance if you made some manual changes to a preset theme).

The Delete button allows you to get rid of any themes you don't want.
Changing the Desktop Background
Use a Background Color
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Desktop tab.

Click None.

Click the list arrow, and then click a color.

Click OK or Apply.
Use a Picture
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click
Properties.

Click the Desktop tab.

Click the picture you want.

To select another picture, click Browse, locate and


select a picture, and then click Open.

Click OK or Apply.
Display or Hide Desktop Icons
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Desktop tab.

Click Customize Desktop.

On the General tab, select or clear the check boxes to show or


hide desktop icons.

To change the appearance of an icon, select the icon, click Change


Icon, select an icon, and then click OK.

Click OK.

Click OK.
Add Web Content to the Desktop
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.

Click the Web tab.

Click New.

Click Visit Gallery to download free web items, type a Web address to a
specific web page, or click Browse to select a picture or HTML
document.

Click OK, and then click OK again.


Display or Hide Desktop Web
Content
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.

Click the Web tab.

Select or clear the check boxes to show or hide desktop icons.

Click OK, and then click OK again


Cleaning Up the Desktop
• If your desktop gets cluttered with shortcut icons, you can use the Desktop Cleanup
Wizard to move shortcuts that you don't use anymore into a folder. The wizard
automatically runs every 60 days

Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.

To have Windows XP run the cleanup wizard every 60 days, select the Run Desktop
Cleanup Wizard Every 60 Days check box.

Click Clean Desktop Now to start the Desktop Cleanup Wizard, and then click Next.

Clear the check boxes for shortcuts you don't want removed from the desktop.

Click Next.

Review the deletion list of shortcuts.

Click Finish.
Select a Screen Saver
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Screen Saver tab.

Click the list arrow, and then click a screen saver.

Click Settings.

Select the options you want for the screen saver, and then click OK.

Click Preview to see the screen saver in full-screen view, and then move your
mouse to end the preview.

Specify the time to wait until your computer starts the screen saver.

To require a password, select the On Resume, Password Protect check box.

Click OK or Apply
Appearance
• To change the font, size, or colors of individual Window elements, follow these steps :

[Link]-click an empty area of your desktop, and then click Properties.

[Link] the Appearance tab, and then click Advanced.

[Link] the Item list or in the preview window, click the Window element that you want to change. You can select
from any of the following items

NOTE: Not all options for all Window elements are available. For example, the Font option appears dimmed
and is unavailable for elements in the Item list that do not display text.
Under Item:
•In the Size box, specify the size that you want to use for the item
.•In the Color box, specify the color that you want to use for the item.

Under Font:

•Click the font that you want to use for the item.
•In the Size box, specify the font size.
•In the Color box, specify the color that you want.
•To apply a bold font, click B. To italicize the font, click I.A preview of your current settings is displayed in the
preview window.
[Link] you are finished making the changes that you want, click OK twice to save your settings.
Display Settings
• Change the Display Size.
Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties.

Click the Settings tab.

Drag the slide to specify a screen size.

Click the list arrow, and then click a color quality.

Click OK or Apply.
If the Monitor Settings dialog box appears, click Yes or No to accept or
decline the new settings.
Windows reverts to original settings after 15 seconds.
Folder Option
Working with Fonts
• Install a Font
Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Fonts
icon in Classic view.

Click the File menu, and then click Install New Font.

Navigate to the drive and folder containing the font you want to install.

Select the font. To select more than one font, hold down the Ctrl key while
you click each font.

Click OK.

Click the Close button.
