Module 1: Knowing

and Understanding
Oneself during Middle
and Late Adolescence
Topic 1: Self-Concept
inventory: Exploring
One’s Strengths and
Limitations
Self
-is the union of elements,
namely: Body, thoughts, feelings
or emotions, and sensations that
constitutes the individuality and
identity of a person.
Self-Concept
-refers to the awareness of
yourself.
Categories of Self-Concept
1. Ideal Self
2. Actual Self
Ideal Self
- is the self that you aspire to be.
- an idealized image that we have
developed over time, based on
what we have learned and
experienced.
Actual Self
-is the one that you actually see.
-Is who we actually are, how we think,
how we feel, look and act.
-It can be seen by others, but because
we have no way of truly knowing how
others view us, the actual self is our
self-image.

group shall rate the performance of each

Personal Effectiveness
-means making use of all
the personal resources
talents, skills, energy and
time, to enable you to
achieve life goals.
Self-Efficacy
-does not refer to your
abilities but rather to your
beliefs about what you can
do with your abilities.
Being self-aware, making the
most of your strengths,
learning new skills and
techniques and behavioral
flexibility are all keys to
improving your personal
performance.
Strengths
 are natural capabilities and skills
that each person has.

You feel energized, higher self-

esteem, well-being, and other
desirable outcomes.
Our personal effectiveness
depends on our innate
characteristics - talent and
experience accumulated in
the process of personal
development.
Talents first are needed to be identified
and then developed to be used in a
particular subject area (science,
literature, sports, politics, etc.).

Experience includes knowledge and

skills that we acquire in the process of
cognitive and practical activities.
Knowledge is required for setting goals,
defining an action plan to achieve them and
risk assessment.

Skills also determine whether real actions

are performed in accordance with the plan.
If the same ability is used many times in the
same situation, then it becomes a habit that
runs automatically, subconsciously.
Classification of Skills
1. Determination
2. Self-Confidence
3. Persistence
4. Managing Stress
5. Problem-Solving Skills
6. Creativity
7. Generating Ideas
Self –Esteem

ability and value.
Self Acceptance
the act of embracing yourself with
all of your positive and negative
traits, strengths and weaknesses,
without judgement.
Self-Awareness

your personality, including
strengths, weaknesses,
thoughts, beliefs, motivation,
and emotions.
Johari Window
It is a technique to improve self-
awareness within an individual.
It helps to understand your relationship
with yourself and others.
It is a method for self-discovery.
It allows people to identify their
strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots.
The Four Regions/ Quadrants of Johari Window
Open Self
What others know about
you and you know too.

This is the public self.

Blind Self
What others know about you, but
you don’t.

The views that others have of us

may be different from those we
have of ourselves.
Hidden Self
What others don’t know about
you, but you do. It’s your secrets.

The private self- there are

often parts of our selves that are
too private to share with others.
Unknown Self
What others don’t know about you and
you don’t either.

The Undiscovered Self- it may include

good and bad things that may remain
forever undiscovered or may one day be
discovered.
Self-Awareness and Self-
Disclosure
Showing people who you are
requires self-awareness and
self-disclosure. The Johari
Window is effectively a lens on
your own self-awareness as on
self-disclosure.

The Treasure Within
Me (Long Bond Paper)

3 and 4 my two greatest achievements in life
5 what in myself am I proudest of
6 my happiest moment
7 positive words that my friends use to describe me
8 a personal goal that I have already achieved
9 three blessings for which I am most thankful to God
10 three of my positive qualities
11 difficulties, challenges and problems that I was
