IPv4 Introduction

• IPv4 is the foundation of modern

internet communication
• It defines how data packets are
addressed and routed
• IPv4 uses 32-bit addressing for
unique IP addresses
• Understand the IPv4 header
structure and role of fields
IPv4: Brief Background

• Developed in 1981 by the Internet

Engineering Task Force.
• Designed for end-to-end packet-based
communication.
• Header ensures correct fragmentation
and error handling.
• Issues like address exhaustion and
fragmentation overhead emerged.
• IPv4 remains dominant due to
widespread use.
Challenges Addressed by IPv4
• Early networks lacked universal
packet identification and delivery
• IPv4 header design ensured unique
device addressing
• IPv4 provided reliable packet delivery
across networks
• Fragmentation control for variable
network MTUs was achieved
• Error detection via checksum was an
important feature
Related Technologies to
IPv4
• TCP and UDP work with IPv4 for
data transfer.
• ICMP uses IPv4 for error and
control messages.
• NAT extends IPv4's lifespan by
reusing private IPs.
• IPv6 is the successor to IPv4 with
larger addresses.
IPv4 Header Design

• IPv4 header ranges from

20 to 60 bytes
• It consists of 14 fixed
fields for control data
• Key fields include
Version, IHL, TTL, and
Protocol
• Source and Destination
IP addresses are crucial
IPv4: Discussion and
Limits
• IPv4 fields ensure accurate routing
and error handling
• TTL and Checksum fields provide
network stability
• Fragmentation fields manage large
data transfers
• The options field adds custom
control capabilities
• IPv4's simplicity ensures its
widespread adoption
IPv4: Conclusion

• IPv4 header ensures efficient

data transmission and routing
• Each field plays a role in
reliability and interoperability
• IPv4 remains foundational
despite IPv6 adoption growth
• Design understanding is key for
networking concepts
