CONCEPTS OF CENTIMETRES AND
METRES
Centimeter (cm) is a metric unit of length
that equals one hundredth of a meter.
That's, 100 cm = 1 m
Meter (m) is a metric unit of length that
equals one hundred of a centimeter. That's,
1 m = 100 cm.
Example 1
Convert 5 meters to centimeters
Solution
Since 1m = 100cm,
5m = 5 x 100cm = 500 cm
Example 2
Convert the following to centimeters
a) 3m 54cm.
b) 6.45m
Solution
a) 3m 54cm = 3 x 100cm + 54cm
= 300cm + 54cm
= 354cm
b) 6.45m = 6.45 x 100cm
= 645cm

To convert a measurement in
grams to a measurement in
kilograms,
Since one kilogram is equal to
1,000 grams, you can use this
simple formula to convert:
kilograms = grams ÷ 1,000
Example 1
A rice seller has a bag of rice that
weighs 5,000 grams. If he wants to
record the weight in kilograms, how
many kilograms does the bag of rice
weigh?
Solution
5000 g = (5,000 g ÷ 1,000)
= 5 kg
The bag of rice weighs 5 kilograms.
Example 2
Convert to kilograms:

b. 875 grams
Solution
a. 3 504 g = 3 504 ÷1000
= 3.504orkg3 kg 504 g
b. 875 g = 875 ÷ 1000
= 0.875 g
