• A caption is text that appears below an image. It
explains what is shown in an image or
illustration. Its function is to help the reader
understand information that may or may not be in
the text. Most caption drawn attention to
something in the image that is not obvious, such as
its relevance to the text. Caption can consist of a
few words of description , or several [Link]
caption is a short explanation that accompanies an
article, photograph or illustration. And a caption is
the title of a document
The are several criteria for good caption.
• Clearly identifies the subject of the picture, without detailing the
obvious
• Is succinct
• Establishes the pictures relevance to the article
• Provides context for the picture
• Draws the reader into the article.
Stages of preparing caption:
Determination of the intent and purpose
Selection of the proper image
Posting information /news photos include:
Who involved in the event in photos
When is the event
The event
• Determine the title of the photos
• Adjustment caption message with the mission of the media.
• Caption also include a short title or heading of an
article in a magazine or news paper. Words
shown on cinema or television secreen to
establish the scene of a story are also called
caption. Photo caption also known as cutlines are
a few lines of text used to explain or elaborate on
published photoghraph.
• When writing a caption , the descriptive
words should offer more complete information
about the picture. The words that you choose
depends on the message that you want to send to
your reader.
Photo captions and cutlines
Photo captions and cutlines are the most read body type in a
publications. Of all the news content only the titles of stories or
headlines have higher readersip than caption because the element
of publication that is often read first ic photo caption. Writing photo
acaption is an important part of photoghraper’s work. A photo
caption gives the readers basic information to understand the
photoghraph and is related to the news.
Captions and cutlines are terms often used
interchangeably,particularly at magazines for our purposes,
we will make the following distinctions :
• Captions : captions are the little ’’headlines ’’over the cutlines
’’( the words describing the photograph
• Cutlines: cutlines ( at newpaper and some magazine )are the
words (under the captions,if there is one ) describing the
photograph or illustrations.
When you write a photo caption , there are some rules that
you have follows :
1) Supply specific information( answering 5 WH questions)
who/what is that
What is going on
When did it happen
Why did it happen
How did it happen

[Link] the present tense to describe action in the photo


[Link] are written in a complete sentence mostly declarative
sentence
[Link] identify the people and location that appear in the
photo
