WHAT CAUSE PEOPLE TO
REACT TO FRUSTRATION?
Psychologists have introduced the concept of
anxiety.
The unpleasant/ uncomfortable emotion
characterized b terms like “worry”, “apprehension”,
“dread”, and “fear”, and “threat” that we all
experience at times in varying degrees.
So, we are strongly motivated to do something to
alleviate the discomfort often using a combination of
defensive and coping strategies.
DEFENSE MECHANISM
(SIGMUND FREUD)
The unconscious processes
that protect a person against
anxiety by distorting reality in
some way.
They all involve an element of
self-deception.
1. DENIAL
- unacceptable impulses or ideas
are not perceived or allowed into
full awareness.
Ex: a cardiac patient may deny
fear of death anytime.
2. REPRESSION
- denial of an impulse or memory
that might provoke feelings of guilt
by its disappearance from
awareness.
Ex: Feelings of hostility toward a love
one may be vanished from memory
because it causes anxiety.
3. RATIONALIZATION
- self-esteem is maintained by
assigning plausible and acceptable
reasons for conduct entered on
impulsively or for less acceptable
reasons.
Ex: Making other people as an excuse
“My roommate did not wake me.”
4. DISPLACEMENT
-diversion of emotions
-You friends said hurtful message
instead of confronting them, you
later lash out at your sister.
5. SUBLIMATION
- refocusing of unacceptable
thoughts into acceptable
Ex:A person experiencing aggressive
impulses instead challenges that
energy into rigorous exercise.
-successful to athlete.
6. RATIONALIZATION
- developing false through plausible
excuses to justify unacceptable
behavior
Ex:Stealing from a store and
justifying the theft be saying: “They
make millions in profit so it doesn’t
matter.”
7. INTELLECTUALIZATION
- overthinking and misdirection of
focus when confronted with
unacceptable situations
Ex: Someone facing a serious health
diagnosis instead of expressing fear or
sadness , focuses on searching
medical facts.
8. COMPENSATION
- counter-balancing of perceived
flaws or weaknesses by instead
emphasizing strengths
Ex: One says she can’t draw but is
good at dancing.
9. DISSOCIATION
- detachment from the reality and
from oneself, the person
disconnects from the reality and
lives in their own world.
Ex: Mental separation
