you read and create. The kind of
text depends on their purpose and
meaning.
DIFFERENT
TEXT TYPES
EXPOSITORY
TEXT
writing that seeks to explain ,
illuminate or expose. The main
purpose is to provide the reader
with comprehensive or detailed
information about a particular topic.
EXAMPLE
Adolescence is often considered as one of the
most challenging , most turbulent and most
difficult phases of life for both children and
their parents. During this transition from
childhood to adulthood, teenagers often seek
the possibility of being able to identify
themselves as they start to search for their
place in this world.
NARRATIVE TEXT
can be fiction or non-
fiction. Its purpose is to
tell a story to the
reader.
EXAMPLE
One day, a fearsome beast invaded the
forest, causing chaos and despair
among its inhabitants. The once
harmonious place was now filled with
fear and anguish, as the beast’s
rampage left destructions in its wake.
ARGUMENTATIVE
TEXT
is typically formal. The writer aims
to engage the reader and convey
the issues and intends to identify
and characterize experiences, facts,
situations and actions in either
abstract or real.
EXAMPLE
As online learning becomes more common,
and more and more resources are
converted to digital form, some people
have suggested that public libraries should
be shutdown and, in their place, everyone
should be given an iPad with an e-reader
subscription.
PROCEDURAL TEXT
is used to describe things that involve
a specific procedure – a particular way
of doing something especially one that
is usually repeated a sequence of
actions or steps necessary to
accomplish a specific task.
EXAMPLE
How to Make Fairy Bread
1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
2. Put a slice of white bread on a plate or bread board.
3. Spread butter or margarine over the bread using a knife.
4. Shake Hundreds and Thousands sprinkles over buttered
area.
5. Cut the bread into triangles.
DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
its main purpose is to describe
a character, an event, and a
place. The author visualizes
what he or she sees, smells
and feels.
EXAMPLE
He was a big man with short
curly hair, brown teeth and a flat
nose. A scar crossed his right
cheek from ear to chin.
INSTRUCTIVE
TEXT
is written to instruct someone to
do something and follows
procedures to be done. Its words
are commanding and may use
formal and direct words.
EXAMPLE
Go to the end of the road, turn
left past the store on the
corner, keep walking until you
reach to a park and then turn
right into avenue street.
PERSUASIVE TEXT
The main purpose is to convince
or persuade others to agree with
the author’s point of view. It
contains justifications and reasons.
EXAMPLE
Buy our new skincare product because it
contains good chemicals that exfoliate and
rejuvenate your skin. It has been clinically
tested and proven safe for use by
dermatologist. Try it today!
INFORMATIVE
TEXT
It is a non-fiction writing to inform the
reader about a specific topic. It is
written using special text feature that
allow the reader to find essential
information and understand the main
topic quickly.
EXAMPLE
The nicotine and other poisonous
chemicals in tobacco cause lots of
diseases, like heart problems and
some kinds of cancer.
