Security Layers

First Line of Defense: The Perimeter (the most outer layer)

Purpose :

A medium or structure which defines the physical limits of

an installation or area to restrict or impede access thereto
Known as the forefront of physical security or perimeter
protection. This initial level aims to deter unauthorized
access and provide a barrier against external threats

First Line of Defense

Examples :-
 Physical Barriers: Fences, walls, barbed wire, and gates.
 Access Control: Automatic gates with key card readers or
biometric scanners.
 Prevention: Lighting, security cameras, and perimeter
intrusion detection systems (PIDS), Security personnel or
patrol services
Security Layers

Security Tools and Equipment for Perimeter Protection:

Fences and Walls: Physical barriers,

such as high walls and fences, form
the primary layer of perimeter
protection. These act as both
deterrents and delays.
Access Control Points: Controlled
entry and exit points with gates or
turnstiles that restrict access to

Surveillance Cameras: CCTV cameras are

strategically placed along the perimeter to
monitor and record activities. They aid in
detection and documentation of security
breaches.

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): These

systems use sensors (e.g., motion
detectors, laser beams, and seismic
sensors) to identify unauthorized

Lighting: Adequate exterior lighting,

including motion-activated lighting, can
deter intruders and enhance the
effectiveness of surveillance cameras.

Access Control Technologies: These include

card readers, biometric access systems, and
keypad entry for controlling access at gates
and entry points

Drones and UAVs: In some cases,

unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may
be used for aerial surveillance of the
perimeter.

Physical Security Personnel: Security

guards patrolling the perimeter, as
well as security checkpoints, play a
significant role in both deterrence

Security Signage: Signs indicating

restricted access, video surveillance,
or warning of alarms can contribute
to deterrence.

Second Line of Defense: Inside the Perimeter

Purpose:
To protect the facility itself by preventing intruders
who have bypassed the perimeter from entering into
the main building
In layman’s term the top, sides and bottom of the
