Virtual Device Context (VDCs)
• Partition a single physical device into multiple logical devices
• Fault isolation, management isolation, address allocation isolation
• Multi tenancy environments
• Similar to context in ASA
VDC Management
• Different administrator for each VDC
• Default, non default and Admin VDCs
• Default User Roles
• network-admin
• network-operator
• vdc-admin
• vdc-operator
VDC Resources
• Physical Resources
• Interfaces
• Logical Resources
• Port Channels
• VLANs
• VRFs
• VDC Resource Templates
• VDC Configuration Files
VDC Management
• Default User Roles
• network-admin
• network-operator
• vdc-admin
• vdc-operator
• VDC Management Connections
• Virtual management ‘mgmt 0’ interface for OOB management of each VDC
• In-band management through any physical interface
Layer 2 Switching Review
• VLANs
• VLAN Numbering
• 1 (Normal, Cisco default, cannot modify or delete this VLAN)
• 2 to 1005 (Normal)
• 1006 to 3967 (Extended, always active, always enabled, cannot be shut
down)
• 3968 to 4094 (Internally Allocated)
Spanning Tree Overview
• Rapid PVST+ (Default)
• MST
• STP Extensions
• Port Types (Normal, Edge, Network)
• Bridge Assurance
Layer 2 Technology Evolution
• STP used for Layer 2 networks to build loop free topology
• STP has disadvantages
• Inability to leverage parallel forwarding paths
• Forms a forwarding tree rooted at a single device
• All data plane traffic flows along this tree
• Adding parallel paths adds redundancy but does not provide
aggregation
• STP blocks additional paths
Spanning Tree Blocks Parallel
Paths
Spanning Tree Suboptimal
Forwarding
• Forwarding path rooted at a single device can cause suboptimal
forwarding paths.
• A direct connection may exist but cannot be used because only one
active forwarding path is allowed
Spanning Tree Suboptimal
Forwarding Paths
Port Channels
• Aggregating multiple physical interfaces to create a logical interface
• 8 physical links in M-Series Cards
• 16 physical links in F-Series Cards
• LACP
• Port Channel was between 2 devices only.
1 downstream device & 1 upstream device
Increases BW but still has single point of failure

• Limitation: If we add second upstream device, STP will block one uplink
1 downstream device & 2 upstream devices
STP will block one uplink
Increase resilience but no increase in BW
Improvements through Virtual Port
Channel (VPC)
• VPC was introduced in 2008
• Virtual Port Channel is between 3 devices
1 downstream device and 2 upstream devices
Active-active forwarding made possible over two parallel paths without STP blocked links
Increases BW and resilience
Logically appears as 2 device port channel
