Elements of the Scout Method

A natural system of Self Education - A system of progressive self education - Intended to help each young person to use or develop his capacities and interests - Provides an educational framework based upon how young people develop naturally - Offers a way of life which channels their energy in a way which enables them to experience being autonomous, supportive, responsible and committed straight away, to the extent of their current capacities

The Scout Oath and Law and Promise - Scout law, code of living for each individual Scout and for the members of the unit collectively, based on Scouting principles - The promise is a personal pledge to do ones best to live according to that code which every young person makes before group or peers when he chooses to join the movement

Learning by doing - Means developing as a result of first hand experience as opposed to theoretical instruction - Reflects Scouting approach to practical education, on learning through the opportunities for experience that arise in the course of pursuing interests

The patrol (team ) system - Basic organizational structure of the local unit - Each small group, comprising of 6-8 leaders, operates as a team . - Within each teams the leaders organize their life as a group, sharing responsibilities, and decide upon, organize, carry out and evaluate their activities - This is done with the supervision of adult leadership

Symbolic Framework - Importance of symbols in Scouting - Represents something more vast or abstract to help people understand and identify with concepts through an appeal to the imagination - Purpose is to build on young peoples capacity for imagination, adventure, creativity and inventiveness which stimulate their development

Personal progress - Concerned with helping each young person to develop the inner motivation to consciously and actively be involved in his development - Enables a person to progress in his own way and pace

Nature - Natural environment, woods, plains, sea mountain - Ideal setting in which the Scout method can be applied, offers the development of a youngs physical, intellectual emotional, social, and spiritual potentials - For those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, the forest is at once a laboratory, a club, a temple

Adult Support - Three aspects

1. Activity leader, activities should be successfully carried out 2. Educator, needs to directly support the process of self educating and ensure that what a young person experiences has a positive impact on the development of that young person

3. Group facilitator - Needs to ensure that the relationship within the group are positive and enriching to all and that the group provides a supportive environment
