Drawing Circuit Diagrams

Drawing Circuit Diagrams

• Circuit diagram = a diagram that uses
standard symbols to represent the
components in an electric circuit and their
connections
– Connections are always shown using straight
horizontal or vertical lines
Rules for Drawing Circuit Diagrams
1. Cables and wires in a circuit are drawn as
straight lines.
2. Wires should not cross over each other.
3. Use correct symbols for each part of the
circuit.
4. When drawn, the circuit forms a closed loop.
There should be no breaks in a complete
circuit.
Electrical Symbols
Battery (dry cell): Light bulb:
– Provides electrical
energy – An example of an
– Makes one end of electrical load
the conductor – Converts electrical
negative and one
end positive
energy into light
energy
Electrical Symbols
Connecting Wire: Switch:
– Made from
conductive – Control the flow of
material allowing electricity; allows
electrons to pass electricity to be
through without
the loss of energy
turned on and off
Electrical Symbols
• Switch = controls current flow in
an electric circuit
– When the switch is “on”, the circuit is
closed and there is a path for
electrons to flow
– When the switch is “off” the circuit is
open and the path is incomplete
• Examples: On-off switches
Symbol: (on/closed)
(off/open)
Electrical Symbols
Motor: Resistor:
– An example of an
electrical load – An example of an
– Converts electrical electrical load
energy into – Decreases the
mechanical
energy
current through a
component by a
specific amount
Electrical Symbols
Ammeter: Voltmeter:
– A device that – A device that measures
measures the current the potential difference
in one location of a (voltage) across a
circuit component in the circuit
– Must be placed in – Must be placed in parallel
series in the circuit in the circuit
Series Circuits
Series Circuit: Think to yourself…
– A circuit in which If there is only way for me
there is only one to trace a path from the
path along which positive terminal to the
electrons can flow negative terminal of the
battery, then it is a series
circuit!
What does this series
circuit look like in a
circuit diagram?
Parallel Circuits
Parallel Circuit:
– A circuit in which there
is more than one path
along which electrons
can flow
What does this parallel
circuit look like in a
circuit diagram?
