Basic Sentence Structure

Parts of Sentence
• Subject: the person or thing that does something
 She likes cats.
• Verb: a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of
being
 She likes cats.
• Object: a person of thing that receives the action of a verb
 She likes cats.
Word Order
Subject + Verb + Object

He reads books.
There are 5 Basic Sentence
Patterns
1. Subject + Verb

Sinthiya Reads

She is eating.

Bob will leave


2. Subject + Verb + Object
I like eggs.

She sees her sister.

He is reading a book.
3. Subject + Verb + Adjective.

Laura is busy.

He is smart.

The flower are red.


4. Subject + Verb + Adverb.
Sarah is here.

Rakib ran slowly.

People are everywhere.


5. Subject + Verb + Noun.
She is my friend.
They are teacher.
He is a doctor.
2. Subject + Verb + Object

I like eggs. (not complement)


She sees her sister.
He is reading a book.
