Understanding Ratios and Simplification

The document explains the concept of ratios, which represent the relationship between quantities and can be expressed in colon or fraction form. It provides examples of ratios, how to simplify them, and distinguishes between ratios and fractions. Additionally, it includes exercises for calculating and simplifying ratios based on given quantities.

RATIO

A ratio shoes relationship between

quantities or terms. It is a mathematical
method of making comparison. A ratio tells
us how much greater or lesser one term is
in comparison with other term. In ration
calculations, the term are separated by
colon (: ) or a bar (___)
Here are the ratio comparing the number of marbles in the
left pocket to the number of the marbles in the right pocket:

Duard’s marbles 5:15

Erick’s marbles 20: 10
Josh’s marbles 20: 30
The ratio 8 to 12 is written as 8:12 or
8/12, both read as “8 is to 12”
A ratio is in its simplest form if the terms are whole numbers that
are relatively prime with each others.

Example: simplify the ratio 8:12.

The number 8 and 12 have a GCF of 4. Thus, divide each term
by 4.

8:12 = ÷ = 2:3
Difference of ratio and fraction. A
ratio represents two quantities, 1
against 2. It is written in a fraction
form by should still be read as “1 is
to 2”. A fraction represents a single
quantity.
The following expression denote rates.
Write them as ratios, then simplify them.

1. 190 km for 4 h
2. 81 km for 9 L
Write each expression using the same unit,
and then, write it as a ratio. Express the
answer in simplest form.
Example:

1 year to 4 months 1.15 minutes to 1 hour

12 months : 4 months 2. 6 hours to 1 day
3:1 3. 5 days to 1 week
4. 3 weeks to 30 days
5. 20 centavos to 1 peso
Write each quantity as rate and express it in simplest
form.
