LOGARITMIC FUNCTIONS

Josie s. Delos Santos, EdD

Master Teacher II
Logarithmic Function with base a is
defined by the equation y=logax,
where a>0 anda≠1
This equation is equivalent to the
exponential equation x=a y
the equation y=logax, is read
as
“ the logarithmic of x base a
equal to y”
Common logarithms-
logarithm with base 10
log10x= log x
* if the base is not
shown it is assumed to
be 10
Natural Logarithms – is a
logarithm with base e and it
is denoted by ln x= loge x
Base

y=logax x=a y

Exponent
Logarithmic Base
Converting from logarithmic
form to exponential form
Logarithmic Exponential
Form Form
Log39=2 32=9
Log84=2/3 8 =4
2/3

Log21/16=-4 2 =1/16
-4
Properties of Logarithms
1. loga1=0
the logarithm of the
number 1 to any base is zero
2. logaa=1
the logarithm of the
number to the same number
as its base is equal to 1.
3. loga1/a=-1
the logarithm of the
reciprocal of a number to the
same number as its base is
equal to -1.
4. logaax=x
5. alogax=x
6. logaMN= logaM+logaN (Product rule)
the logarithm of the product is the
sum of the logaritms.
7. logaM/N= logaM-logaN (Quotient rule)
the logarithm of the quotient is
the difference of the logarithms.
8. logaMc= clogaM (Power rule)
the logarithm of a number raised
to a number is the product of the power
and the logarithm of a number.
9. If logaM= logaN then M=N
Solving Logarithmic Equations
Steps in Solving Logarithmic Equations

1. Write all logarithmic equations on one

side of the equation and the constants
on the other side.
2. Use properties of logarithms to rewrite
the logarithmic expressions as a single
logarithmic expressions

Steps in Solving Logarithmic Equations

3. Use the definition of logarithm to

rewrite the expression in exponential
form.
4. Simplify the exponential expressions
and solve the variable.
1. Solve for the value of x
a. log4(5x+7)-log4(x-3)=2
Solution
log4(5x+7)-log4(x-3)=2
log4 (5x+7) (5x+7)
=2 =16
(x-3) (x-3)
(5x+7)
=42
(x-3)
(5x+7)
(x-3) =16 (x-3)

(5x+7)=16(x-3)
(5x+7)=16x-48
(5x-16x+7)=-48-7
- -11x=-55
(x=5)
2. Solve for the value of x
log 4 = 2- log(x+5)
Solution
Log4 +log (x+5)=2
Log 4(x+5) =2 4x=80
4x=80
4x+20=102
4 4
4x+20=100 x= 20
4x=100-20
3. Solve for the value of x
log(x+5) +log(x-2)= log(x-2
Solution
log(x+5)(x-2)= log(x-2)
(x+5)(x-2)=(x-2)
x+4=0
x2+3x-10=x-2 x=-4
x2+3x-x-10+2=0 x-2=0
x2+2x-8=0 x= 2
(x+4)(x-2)=0
