Creating and Managing Deployment Images
using MDT
Introduction to MDT
MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit) is a free tool from Microsoft that helps IT administrators
automate the deployment of Windows operating systems and applications on multiple
computers
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) is
a Microsoft solution accelerator.
Helps automate Windows OS and
application deployment.
Works with Windows ADK and WinPE.
Supports Lite Touch Installation (LTI).
Centralized management of images.
Reduces manual installation effort.

Key Components of MDT
Deployment Workbench
The main management console.
Used to create shares, task sequences, and configurations.
Deployment Share
A shared folder where all deployment resources are stored.
Includes OS images, apps, drivers, scripts, and settings.
Task Sequences
Automated workflows that define what happens during deployment.
Example: Install OS → Add drivers → Install apps → Configure settings.
Boot Images (WinPE)
Special images generated by MDT.
Used to boot client machines and start the deployment wizard.
Applications & Drivers
Applications (like MS Office, antivirus) and hardware drivers can be added to deployment
share.
Automatically installed during deployment.
Windows Image (.WIM files)
The actual Windows operating system image.
Can be imported from ISO or captured from a reference machine.

MDT is Used For
1. Automating Windows Deployment – No need to manually install OS on each
system.
2. Centralized Image Management – Manage OS, drivers, and apps in one
place.
3. Reducing Manual Workload – IT staff save time by avoiding repetitive
installations.
4. Consistency and Compliance – Ensures all systems follow the same company
policies and standards.
5. Disaster Recovery – Quickly restore or re-image systems after crashes or
malware attacks.
6. Cost Saving of Disadvantages
– Free tool, reduces the need for expensive of software.

Advantages
MDT
MDT •Limited to Windows environment.
•Free Microsoft tool.
•Automates OS & app deployment. •Initial setup is complex.
•Ensures standardization across systems. •Not fully zero-touch (some manual input needed).
•Centralized image & driver management. •No advanced reporting/management features.
•Customizable (apps, drivers, scripts). •Requires IT knowledge (learning curve).
•Saves time & reduces manual work. •Needs regular updates/maintenance.

Step 1 – Install MDT
•Install Microsoft Deployment Toolkit.
•Install Windows ADK (Deployment
Tools + WinPE).
•Launch Deployment Workbench.
•Ensure required permissions.
•Base environment ready.
•Start configuration.
Step 2 – Create Deployment Share
•Right-click Deployment Shares → New
Deployment Share.
•Specify location (e.g., E:\DeploymentShare).

Step 3 – Import Operating
System
• Right-click Operating
Systems → Import OS.
• Choose source: Windows ISO or
custom WIM.
• Copy to deployment share.
• Destination directory created.
• Verifies OS integrity.
• OS now available for task
sequences.
Step 5 – Create Task
Sequence
•Right-click Task Sequences → New.
•Enter Task Sequence ID and Name.
•Select Standard Client Task Sequence.
•Choose imported OS.
•Set admin password/product key.
•Task sequence created.

Step 6 – Boot Images
• Open Deployment Share →
Properties → Windows PE.
• Customize architecture
(x86/x64).
• Update Deployment Share.
• Generates LiteTouchPE_x64.iso.
• ISO used for PXE or USB boot.
• Required for client deployment.
Step 7 – Deploy
Image
•Boot client with LiteTouchPE ISO
(PXE/USB).
•MDT Wizard launches.
•Select task sequence.
•OS, apps, drivers installed.
•Process fully automated.
•Client ready with Windows + apps.
