Phosphorus

1
Introduction
Phosphorus-containing polymers are macromolecules
in which phosphorus atoms, either in the side chains
or the main backbone, form an essential component of
the polymer's structure. These polymers can be
anything from polyphosphazenes, which have an
alternating phosphorus-nitrogen backbone, to
polyphosphoesters, which have phosphoester groups
that are hydrolytically degradable and resemble
biomolecules like nucleic acids. They have a wide
range of uses due to their varied chemical structures,
which include materials with improved thermal
stability and flame retardancy as well as biomedical
applications.
2
Chain Polymers
A "chain phosphorus polymer" refers to a
synthetic polymer with phosphorus atoms
directly incorporated into its main molecular
backbone, such as polyphosphazenes (PPz)
and polyphosphoesters (PPE).
Examples:
• Polyphosphazines Polyphosph
• Polyphosporyl chlorides
• Polyphosphoric acids
azine

3
Network Polymers
Network phosphorus polymers are
three-dimensional macromolecular
structures featuring a network of
interconnected phosphorus-
containing polymers.
Examples:
• Boron phosphate glass Red Phosphorous Structure
• Polymeric phosphorous
pentoxide
• Ultraphosphate glass
4
Polyphosphonitrilic
Chloride
• Inorganic Rubber
• Melts at 114'C
• Soluble in Benzene,ether
and carbon tetrachloride
• High Elasticity and can be
strectched
Examples:
• Triphosphonitrilic Chloride Polyphosphonitrilic
• Tetraphosphonitrilic
chloride Chloride

Structure of (NPCl2)3
• (NPCl₂)₃ has a planar six-
membered ring.
• N atoms → sp² hybridised; P
atoms → sp³ hybridised.
• N lone pair in sp² orbital → gives
basic character.
• Bond angles ~120° (planar
structure).
• Shows resonance like benzene
→ aromatic.
6
Vitreous

polyphosphates
Vitreous polyphosphates =
polymers; negative polyphosphate
anions balanced by Na⁺, K⁺.
• Structure: contain P=O and P–O–Na
linkages.
• Prepared by heating Na₄P₂O₇ or
Na₃PO₄ with P₂O₅.
• Uses: Short-chain → deflocculation
of proteins; Long-chain → food
industry.
7
Crystalline Polymetaphosphates:
• Polymetaphosphates =
salts of
polymetaphosphoric
acids.
• General formula:
HₙPₙO₃ₙ or (HPO₃)ₙ.
• Formed by removing n
H₂O from n H₃PO₄.

Borophosphate Glasses:

Preparation: Formed by
heating HPO₃, B₂O₃, and
alkali metal
carbonates/oxides at ~700
°C.
Types:
• Excess alkali > P₂O₅: all B
atoms as trigonal BO₃
groups.
• Excess P₂O₅ > alkali:
called acidic
borophosphate glasses.
Sodium Borophosphate Glasses:

Benefits, Challenges & Trends

• Benefits: greater efficacy, prolonged treatment lifetime, better

tolerance in harsh conditions, more benign environmental profile.
• Challenges: some existing polymers still lag in adsorption vs
simple phosphonates; fewer large-scale field studies; higher cost
for specialized phosphorus functionalization.
• Trends: development of P-tagged, end-capped, grafted,
hyperbranched polymer inhibitors; balancing green chemistry with
performance; deeper understanding of structure–performance
relationships.
