APPLICATION OF GIS

TECHNOLOGY
IN UASIN GISHU COUNTY

UASIN GISHU COUNTY GIS LAB

INTRODUCTION
What is GIS?
Acronym for Geographic Information System.
It is a computer system designed to capture, store, manipulate,
analyse and present spatial data.

2
 GIS has been rapidly adopted by many
organizations as an effective tool for
managing, organizing and analyzing
spatially related data.
 The decision largely involves Spatial
objectives such as land lots, buildings,
roads, storm drains, planning zones, rivers,
parks and management of markets.
 The management of these spatial objects
can be facilitated with the use of GIS to
improve and guide on decision making
 GIS is applied in all departments in the
County to help in decision making and
mapping of County’s resources.

GIS Applications in Various Fields

GIS in Public Health

GIS plays a crucial role in public health by providing spatial analysis tools for disease
surveillance, healthcare accessibility, and resource allocation. Some key applications
include:

Disease Mapping & Surveillance – Tracking and analyzing the spread of diseases like
malaria, COVID-19, and cholera to identify hotspots and trends.
Epidemiology & Risk Assessment – Identifying environmental factors contributing to
disease outbreaks.
Healthcare Facility Location Analysis – Optimizing the placement of hospitals, clinics,
and emergency response centers based on population density and accessibility.
Monitoring Water and Sanitation Conditions – Assessing the impact of contaminated
water sources on public health.
Health Resource Allocation – Mapping population demographics to ensure equitable
distribution of medical resources.
Diseases prevalence analysis
• GIS was used to analyse disease prevalence and distribution in the County. Malaria,
Tuberculosis and Jigger infestation prevalence was done and a comparison of the same was
done using GIS using 2016 data. The following maps were the output;
2. GIS in Land Surveying

GIS enhances the accuracy and efficiency of land surveying by integrating spatial data for property
management, boundary mapping, and legal documentation. Key applications include:

Cadastral Mapping – Creating digital land parcel maps for ownership records and land tenure management.
Topographic Mapping – Generating detailed terrain models for engineering and development projects.
Remote Sensing for Land Monitoring – Using satellite imagery and drones for high-resolution land surveys.
Boundary and Title Management – Ensuring accurate delineation of property boundaries to prevent disputes.
Infrastructure Planning – Supporting road construction, utilities, and urban expansion projects with precise
land data.
3. GIS in Physical Planning

Physical planning benefits significantly from GIS in terms of urban

design, zoning regulations, and sustainable development. Major
applications include:

Land Use Planning – Analyzing spatial data to designate land for

residential, commercial, and industrial purposes.
Urban Growth Analysis – Monitoring and predicting urban
expansion to guide infrastructure development.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) – Evaluating the
impact of development projects on natural resources and
ecosystems.
Transport and Infrastructure Planning – Designing road
networks, public transport systems, and pedestrian pathways for
efficient urban mobility.
Disaster Risk Management – Identifying vulnerable areas prone
to floods, landslides, GIS Applications in Public Health

GIS plays a critical role in public health by integrating spatial and

statistical data to analyze disease patterns, improve healthcare
accessibility, and support decision-making. Below are some key
applications, along with case studies demonstrating their impact.

Business
Mapping
• Business mapping is an
activity where the geographic
location of a business premise
is captured and its attributes
(characteristics) are recorded.

•Note: These attributes can

be manipulated, analysed,
processed and accessed for
the purposes of decision
making

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, GIS technology can play a crucial role in revenue collection in the County.
The geographic location of all revenue sources can be mapped and this will help in
decision making, knowing expected revenue in a particular area and in making
projections and this will improve productivity in general.
GIS should be explored as a tool for monitoring revenue collection and as a tool for
presenting data at policy briefings
Business mapping therefore, should be continued in areas not yet covered.
