INSTALLING AND
CONFIGURING A
ROUTER
ROUTE
R• A device that
forwards data
packets to the
appropriate parts of
a computer
network.
Steps on INSTALLING
THE ROUTER
Steps on INSTALLING THE ROUTER
1)Choose the right
placement
Pick a location that is relatively central
and unobstructed, especially for
wireless coverage. Routers should
ideally be placed away from walls, metal
barriers, or large appliances that might
block signals.
Steps on INSTALLING THE ROUTER
2)Connect to ISP /
modem

Use a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable

to connect the router’s WAN
(Internet) port to your modem or
ISP
Steps on INSTALLING THE ROUTER
3)Connect a computer to the LAN

Connect your PC or laptop to one of

the router’s LAN ports using an
Ethernet cable. This lets you access
the router’s admin interface for setup.
Steps on INSTALLING THE ROUTER
4)Power on devices in correct order

a. Turn on the modem (if separated) first and wait until its
status lights stabilize. Cisco
b. Then power on the router and wait for it to fully boot.
c. Watch LED indicators — routers often have a WAN or
Internet light that should come on when the connection is
working.
Steps on INSTALLING THE ROUTER
5)Check basic
connectivity
After booting, ensure that the router
detects the internet link (WAN LED) and
that your connected PC recognizes a
network connection.
Steps on CONFIGURING
THE ROUTER
[Link] the router’s
configuration interface
a. Open a web browser on the connected device.

b. Enter the router’s default gateway in the address bar

(common ones: [Link], [Link],
[Link], etc.).

c. A login screen appears. Use the default username and

password (often something like “admin” / “admin”).
2)Change administrative credentials

Immediately after logging in,

change the default admin
username/password to a strong,
unique one to secure your router.
3)WAN / Internet settings
Based on your ISP, configure one of these modes for the
router’s WAN interface:
• DHCP (automatic IP)
• PPPoE or Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet
(requires ISP username/password)
• Static IP (you enter IP, subnet mask, gateway, DNS)
Enter the information given by your ISP
4)LAN & DHCP configuration

• Assign the router’s internal (LAN) IP (for

example, [Link]).
• Enable the DHCP server and set a pool of
addresses (e.g. .100 to .200) for client
devices.
• Optionally, reserve static IPs for certain
devices (printers, servers).
5)Wireless (Wi-Fi) setup

• Change the default SSID (network name) to

something unique.
• Select secure encryption: ideally WPA2-PSK (AES) or
WPA3 if supported. Avoid insecure protocols such as
WEP.
• Enter a strong Wi-Fi password.
• If available, enable a guest network to isolate visitor
traffic from your main network.
6)Additional & security settings
• Update firmware: check for the latest firmware from
the manufacturer and apply it
• Disable remote management (WAN access to admin
panel) if not required.
• Turn off features you don’t use (e.g. WPS, UPnP).
• Optionally configure firewall settings, port forwarding,
or access control rules.
7)Verify & test
• Try browsing a website to confirm Internet
connectivity.
• Use ping (e.g. ping [Link]) to test basic connectivity.
• Check that devices receive IP addresses from DHCP.
• If you set up port forwarding or remote services, test
them from outside the network.
• Review the status page and logs for errors.
8)Save / back up configuration

• Apply or save your changes so they

persist on reboot.
• Export or back up the router
configuration file, if supported.
CONCLUSION
Installing and configuring a router is important for
setting up a secure and reliable network. The
installation focuses on connecting the router,
modem, and devices properly. Configuration involves
setting passwords, Wi-Fi names, and security
settings to protect the network. Overall, knowing
these steps helps ensure fast, safe, and stable
Internet access.
