Rust Prevention and Metal Preservation

The document discusses the concept of rust, which is a reddish-brown substance that forms on iron-containing metals in the presence of water and oxygen. It explains the importance of processing metals to extend their life and prevent rusting, particularly through painting, which acts as a protective layer. Additionally, it outlines the steps for painting metal and provides examples of painted metal products used to prevent rust.

PROCESSING

DO NOW

• EXPLAIN WHAT IS RUST

DO NOW ANSWER

• A REDDISH-BROWN SUBSTANCE WHICH FORMS ON METAL CONTAINING IRON

IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER AND OXYGEN
SWBAT

• IDENTIFY PROCESSING
• EXPLAIN HOW TO PRESERVE METALS , PAINTING METALS
• IDENTIFYING EXAMPLES OF PAINTED METAL PRODUCTS
PROCESSING
• MANY OF THE RESOURCES THAT WE USE TO SATISFY OUR
NEEDS OR WANTS NEED TO BE PROCESSED (OR CHANGED)
IN ORDER TO EXTEND THEIR LIFE OR TO CHANGE THEIR
CHARACTER. FOR EXAMPLE, THE METAL THAT WE FIND IN
IRON ORE NEEDS TO UNDERGO MANY CHANGES
(PROCESSES) BEFORE IT CAN BE USED TO MAKE A MOTOR
CAR!
• RESOURCES THAT ARE USED AS INPUTS IN PROCESSING:
PEOPLE MONEY MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE TOOLS
ENERGY TIME
PRESERVING METALS

• METALS ARE WIDELY USED IN THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

BECAUSE THEY HAVE MANY VALUABLE QUALITIES.
• STRONG AND DURABLE(DURABILITY)
• CAN BE MADE TO CHANGE SHAPE BY HAMMERING
(MALLEABILITY)
• CAN BE MELTED AND CAST INTO MANY SHAPES (FLEXIBILITY)
• CAN BE DRAWN INTO WIRES AND TUBES (DUCTILITY)
PAINTING METALS
• FINISHING A PRODUCT REFERS TO THE LAST TREATMENT APPLIED TO THE
SURFACE OF THE PRODUCT TO IMPROVE ITS APPEARANCE AND TO MAKE IT
MORE RESISTANT TO WEATHER, INSECTS, HEAT, LIQUIDS, FUNGI AND DIRT.
• ONE WAY OF FINISHING METAL IS TO PAINT IT.
• METALS WHICH CONTAIN IRON CAN RUST IF THEY ARE EXPOSED TO AIR
AND WATER. RUSTED METAL HAS A REDDISH-BROWN COLOUR. RUSTING
DAMAGES THE METAL SO WE NEED TO PROCESS THE METAL TO PREVENT
RUSTING.
• ONE WAY OF PROCESSING METAL TO PREVENT RUSTING IS BY PAINTING
THE METAL.
EXAMPLES OF PAINTED METAL PRODUCTS:

• METAL DOORS, WINDOW FRAMES AND GUTTERS ARE

OFTEN PAINTED TO PREVENT RUST.
• PAINTING IS A PHYSICAL PROTECTION METHOD
BECAUSE BY ADDING A LAYER OF PAINT , YOU PROTECT
THE METAL WITHOUT CHANGING IT.
HOW TO PAINT METAL

• USE A RAG TO REMOVE OIL/GREASE AND DIRT FROM THE SURFACE OF

THE METAL.
• IF THE SURFACE OF THE METAL IS NOT SMOOTH, USE SANDPAPER TO
ACHIEVE A SMOOTH FINISH.
• USE A PAINT BRUSH TO APPLY RED OXIDE PRIMER AS AN UNDERCOAT.
ONCE THE UNDERCOAT HAS DRIED, APPLY A TOP COAT OF ENAMEL.
• SPRAYING GIVES A SMOOTHER FINISH ON METALS THAN BRUSHING.
ACTIVITY

• [Link] DESCRIBE THE PROCESS OF RUSTING

• 2. THATO SAYS THAT PAINTING IS A WAY OF PRESERVING METAL BECAUSE
THE LAYER OF PAINT PREVENTS OXYGEN IN THE AIR FROM COMING INTO
CONTACT WITH THE METAL.
• BONGI SAYS THAT PAINTING IS A WAY OF PRESERVING METAL BECAUSE THE
LAYER OF PAINT PREVENTS MOISTURE FROM COMING INTO CONTACT WITH
THE METAL.
