CITIZEN JOURNALISM
• Citizen journalism refers to the involvement of
ordinary people in news collection, production,
sharing, analysis, and commentary processes, which
are often facilitated by the Internet and technology.
• It represents a shift in who creates and delivers
news, with ordinary individuals acting as journalists.
• The rise of the Internet and technology has led to
the emergence of citizen journalism, also known as
participatory journalism or user-generated
content journalism.
• Online citizen journalism has been changing news
creation and the concept of news. This shift has led
to questions about who makes news, what
constitutes news, and who delivers it.
CITIZEN JOURNALISM IN INDIA
Citizen journalism in India is currently reshaping the media landscape,
empowering marginalized communities, and contributing to social change.
The growth of citizen journalism in India can be attributed to several key factors.
The first is increasing internet access availability and affordability, mainly
through mobile devices. This has made it easier for ordinary citizens to
connect to the internet, access information, and share their stories.
Secondly, the proliferation of mobile technology, particularly smartphones with
built-in cameras and recording devices, has given citizens the tools to capture
and document events as they unfold.
Finally, a growing dissatisfaction with the mainstream media's coverage of
specific issues, particularly those affecting marginalized communities, has
motivated citizens to seek alternative platforms for sharing their perspectives.
