Introduction
• • Utilization factor is an important term in
electrical power utilization.
• • It indicates how efficiently the installed
capacity of equipment is used.
Definition
• Utilization Factor (Uf) = Maximum Demand /
Rated Capacity of Equipment
• It represents how effectively the equipment’s
installed capacity is utilized.
Importance
• • Indicates the efficiency of equipment use.
• • Helps in designing and selecting equipment
of proper capacity.
• • Higher utilization factor = better use of
installed equipment.
Typical Values
• • Domestic load → 0.3 to 0.6
• • Industrial load → 0.6 to 0.9
Numerical Example 1
• Given:
• Rated capacity of plant = 200 kW
• Maximum demand = 150 kW
• Uf = 150 / 200 = 0.75
• Therefore, Utilization Factor = 0.75 or 75%
Numerical Example 2
• Given:
• Rated capacity of generator = 500 kVA
• Maximum demand = 350 kVA
• Uf = 350 / 500 = 0.7
• Therefore, Utilization Factor = 0.7 or 70%
Graphical Representation
• A bar chart can be added here showing Rated
Capacity vs. Maximum Demand for the above
examples.
Conclusion
• • Utilization factor helps in assessing the
effectiveness of power utilization.
• • It should be as high as possible for economic
operation.
• • Proper design and load management
improve the utilization factor.
