After and Forward Perpendiculars Defined

The document provides definitions for various nautical terms related to ship measurements, including After Perpendicular (AP), Forward Perpendicular (FP), Length Between Perpendiculars (LBP), and Length Overall (LOA). It also defines Base Line, Moulded Beam, Moulded Draft, Moulded Depth, Extreme Beam, Extreme Draft, and Extreme Depth. These terms are essential for stability calculations, berthing, and docking plans.

Definitions

After Perpendicular (AP): It is the

perpendicular drawn to the waterline at
the point where the after side of the
rudder post meets the summer load line.
Where no rudder post is fitted it is taken as
the center line of the rudder stock.

Forward Perpendicular (FP): It is the

perpendicular drawn to the waterline at
the point where the fore-side of the stem
meets the summer load line.
Length Between Perpendiculars (LBP):
It is the length between the forward
and aft perpendiculars measured
along the summer load line. LBP is
used in all stability calculations.

Length Overall (LOA): It is the length

of vessel taken over all extremities.
LOA is used for berthing and docking
plans.
Base Line: It is the horizontal line
drawn at the top of the keel plate. All
vertical molded dimensions are
measured relative to this line.

Moulded Beam: It is the beam or

breath measured inside the inner
shell strakes of plating at the
amidships section of the ship.
Moulded Draft: It is the draught
measured from the base line to the
summer load line at the amidships
section.

Moulded Depth: It is measured from

the base line to the top of the beams
of the uppermost continuous deck at
the ship’s side amidships.
Extreme Beam: It is the maximum
beam taken over all extremities i.e.
between the outside of shell plating.

Extreme Draft: It is draft measured

from the lowest point of keel to the
summer load line. Draft marks
represent extreme drafts.

Extreme Depth: It is depth of vessel

at ship’s side from upper deck to
