Understanding Visible Rays in EM Spectrum

Visible rays are a part of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths ranging from 400 to 700 nm, detectable by the human eye. They are essential for vision, photosynthesis, and various technologies, while also exhibiting both wave and particle properties. Although normal visible light is safe, intense sources can pose risks to eye health.

Visible Rays

Class 12 - Electromagnetic Waves

Prepared by: [CHINMAYANAND R S]
Introduction
• - Electromagnetic waves = oscillating electric & magnetic fields
• - Travel without a medium (speed of light = 3 × 10⁸ m/s)
• - Visible rays: part of EM spectrum detectable by the human
eye
Position in the Spectrum
• - Wavelength range: 400 – 700 nm
• - Lies between:
• • Ultraviolet rays (shorter λ, higher energy)
• • Infrared rays (longer λ, lower energy)
Properties of Visible Rays
• - Cause the sensation of vision
• - Show wave nature: interference, diffraction, polarization
• - Show particle nature: photoelectric effect
• - Different wavelengths = different colors
Color Wavelengths
• - Violet → ~400 nm (shortest λ, highest energy)
• - Blue → ~450–495 nm
• - Green → ~495–570 nm
• - Yellow → ~570–590 nm
• - Orange → ~590–620 nm
• - Red → ~620–700 nm (longest λ, lowest energy)
Importance of Visible Rays
• - Vision: 80% of human information through light
• - Photosynthesis: essential for plants
• - Technology: cameras, microscopes, fiber optics
• - Daily life: color perception, illumination
Applications of Visible Rays
• - Communication: fiber optic cables
• - Medicine: endoscopy, microscopy, optical imaging
• - Astronomy: telescopes
• - Industry: lasers, scanners, projectors
Safety Aspect
• - Normal visible light is safe
• - Intense sources (lasers, welding arcs) can damage eyes
Conclusion
• - Visible rays = tiny fraction of EM spectrum
• - Vital for life, science, and technology
• - Enable vision, photosynthesis, communication, innovation
Thank You
